Merrill “Bud” Warner

07 Feb 1931/June 10 2005

The following is an email from Mary Louise Warner, widow of an 11th Airborne Trooper. I found “Bud” because he was the friend of a 508 Trooper and they had attended Jump School together.

The 508 Trooper had asked me to find “Bud” which I did. When I called the 508 Trooper to give him the good news, I was informed that he had passed away just a few days before I called.

“Bud” and I stayed in contact for many years as I drove truck across Nebraska. There was a truck stop near where “Bud” lived and I would stop and give him a call and we would meet for coffee and a visit.

“Bud” always said I was his Airborne Messenger as he only knew one other Airborne Trooper and they hadn’t seen each other in years.

This from Mary Louise,

Hello,

Thank you for inquiring about Bud, it is so hard to let everyone know when something like this happens. He passed over on June 10th, 2005. He had been failing pretty fast for a couple of months. It was so difficult for him to breathe and used every bit of his energy to try to breathe that he was quite weak.

We had Hospice help for about a month and what wonderful angels they are. He was able to slip away in peace here at home with family here at his side.  He is buried at Fort McPherson near Maxwell, NE.

I really miss him. He was my life. We were married 52 years ago yesterday (January 15th-)

He was very proud of being a paratrooper and loved his country. He would have loved to be serving now.

I hope you are well. Have a good life!!

                  Mary Louise Warner.

Email from Al Hotlen HQ Btry 55-56

Rodger,

My friend, over the years the efforts you have single handedly made to find, locate, connect and otherwise bond all of us that went "gyroscope" is amazing.

I personally want to thank you for taking on a job, which in many ways is harder than our friend at the "static line".

Recently I was thinking how your job could include anything that has not already been covered by you and it occurred to me, after a conversation with a buddy from that era, that there is still much confusion relative to the connection between the 320th AFA and the 508 ARCT and I wondered if, at some point, it would be too much trouble to explain the "marriage " between both units during 1955 and 1956?
It is just a thought my friend. Shalom from basic,

I received an email from David L Franks a few minutes ago wanting more info about the 427 AAA & the 508 and this is my reply to him.

David,

We have a lot of the 427 guys found, but unfortunately you, Clifford Erb, Charles Denny, Sam Metcalf, and John Zugschwert are all I have email addresses on.

We had a Lt William M Brown in Japan. Does anyone have any idea where he was from or where he may have retired?

I'm sure you all know that "Tex" Emmons passed away in Augusta, GA 30 September 1989. I was driving truck and visited with him many times before he died. He had reverted back to M/Sgt and served in Ft Benning, GA for a while.

We have had a 427 AAA guy on the roster all these years by the name of Deemer Clapp. We never could find him. Now with some new info I received his name may possibly be Delmer Clapp.

I found this info on a Delmer Clapp in California. He would be 68 years old, from CA and Died in Santa Rosa, CA in Jan 1995.

Can anyone from the 427 AAA verify if his name was indeed, Deemer or Delmer, if the age (would be 68 now) would be correct or if you knew he was from CA??????

I called Sam Miranda “C” Btry 51-53 recently. The reason for the call eludes me at this time however. During our conversation I asked if he had Email or any children or grandchildren close by that had email and now we have an email contact.

Please remember this is Sam’s Grandson’s address so understand the snowboard part of the address is his and not Sam’s. This is a note from Sam’s grandson Jake. Hello Mr.Rodger Jacobson,

My name is Jacob Miranda and I’m writing this email to you from my grandfather Sam Miranda. He wanted me to send you an email letting you know that he would like to keep in contact with you. He said it was really good hearing from you and would like to either keep in contact with you by telephone or email. Please feel free to send me emails any time and I will get them to him as soon as I can.

Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon. My email address is:

Rodger,

As you can imagine, I watch and am interested in the “C” Battery names you show up with.  Over the years I do seem to recall that you had mentioned others.

As I recall you recently found Uriah Plyler in the Carolinas, Lt. Carroll B Poplin in North Carolina, First Sgt Teddy Zebrowski in Florida, Dexter Charlton in Arkansas, who was my first driver as an FO and I thought was from West Virginia, Lt. Frank Olcott in Florida or overseas, and my Motor Sgt Robert Svoboda from Pennsylvania. I seem to remember that you also found Louie Botto in Indiana and M/Sgt Russell Hammonds in GA who went in on D Day in the gliders with the 320th

I believe you are better than you think you are.  I for one really appreciate what you are doing and it really brings back some of the best memories of my life, and you can publish that.

It seems to be getting to the point where I remember things 50 years ago better than what happened yesterday.  Guess that comes from good, clean living!  All the best, Zugschwert

I emailed Gilbert Contreras’ daughter Trish to check on her dad and also to see if she had her baby yet. This is Trish’s reply.

Dear Rodger,

Hello there!

As far as my Dad goes, they have a new computer, but he is not online just yet. Please continue to send his newsletters, updates, etc. here. I print them out for him and I see him regularly so this works. As soon as he is online again we will let you know.

As far as San and I are concerned, we had a baby boy on November 30, 2005. He is now 11 weeks old and the love of our lives. He is a big boy, 23 1/2 inches long and 13 pounds, 6 ounces. He's great. He has managed to escape getting sick this flu season--thank God! Thanks for asking about him. San and I hope all is well with you and Leone. Take care!

Sincerely,

Trish

Yvonne Hanagan, 24 Aug 1930/10 Oct 2004

Yvonne's newsletter came back today with a forwarding address to her son Richard in Raleigh, NC. I called and visited with Richard and found out that his mother passed away in her sleep 10 Oct 2004. Richard and I talked about a variety of subjects, as he was 10 years old when we were in Japan and he remembers quite a bit of that time period. Among them, he remembers coming to the barracks with his dad (John F "Blackjack" Hanagan) on Saturday mornings to wake M/Sgt Charlie Mahan.

Tony Cieslack and Ed Klimek were well known to the Hanagan children, as they and Sgt Walter Ducharme were regular visitors at the Hanagan home. All three were in Sgt Hanagans Commo Section as were a large group of us guys.

Richard will write an article about his parents for us to be published in the newsletter later.

John F Hanagan was the Communications Chief in HQ Btry 54-56

How ironic this is, as I would call Yvonne every year or two and visit with her. I had called Yvonne a few days ago and her phone was disconnected. I called Yvonne after Walter Ducharme and I were visiting and Walter said he and Joan were planning a trip to the West Coast this coming spring.

Walter said they planned on stopping to see Tony Cieslac in Security, CO and Ed Klimek in Gerber, CA while on their trip. I was checking to see how Yvonne was doing and was going to suggest that Walt and Joan could include her on their trip.

Leone and I stopped to visit Yvonne on one of our early trips in the 80's and I had seen her a couple of times when I was still trucking after that.

John and Yvonne (who were about to retire in the late 70's) had been living in Monroe, MI. They built their Retirement home in Lawton, OK and had most everything ready to move when John passed away.

Yvonne and her family had John buried in Lawton, OK as that is where they had planned to live together for the rest of their lives. Yvonne was laid to rest beside her husband John in Lawton.

February 09 2006

Note from Walt Ducharme HQ Btry Radio Chief 54-56 to the Hanagan Report.

            Thanks for the letter.

We almost made it to Lawton several years ago and had planned to visit with Yvonne but we got sidetracked. I have many good memories of the family. We visited often. Jack was a great soldier and a fine leader.

February 09 2006

Hi Rodger,

In your Email, you mentioned about a reunion in Atlanta in April. Is that going to happen or is it on the drawing board?

There is a good chance that we will be able to make that one.  It depends on the date as Easter is on the 16th and Greek Easter is a week later.

It would be great to see some of the fellow troopers.

Please, keep me informed.

 Thanks again,

 John Tsangaris

Note from Ray Soule HQ Btry Commo Section 1955-56 in response to the Hanagan Family report.

Sad to hear about the Hanagan family wow!  I will never forget the time I first met Sgt. Hanagan.  It was our first night in Japan and he called us all together (as we were quarantined for a few days) gave us a great "father" speech.  I recall his words... to this day.

I was a guest at their home one evening for dinner and that was a special treat for a lonely guy from Wenatchee.  Hope you guys are having a warm winter.  Here in Tucson it is cool every evening and about 70 or so during the day.

Stanley M Jones passed away January 19 2006

Jack Hartman HQ Btry 51/53 contacted me recently wanting Stanley M Jones’ mailing address and phone number so he could contact him. This is Jack’s reply after contacting Stan’s wife.

Stan was a Trooper in 320th. AFA 1951/53.
In trying to contact him today I finally got through to his wife...She said that Stanley has been fighting cancer for the past year and died 1/19/06.
She mentioned that he often spoke of his Airborne days and the good people he served with...Stanley was a practicing Attorney and an avid book collector.
Keep Stanley and his wife in your prayers.
Thank you,

Jack Hartman

We received a Memorial Fund Donation from Jack and Sis Hartman HQ Btry 51/54 today.

Thanks Jack for your support.

We also received the following email today from Angela Nugent, Widow of Maxim “Max” Nugent “C” Btry 320th.  We had his deceased date incorrectly reported as 1985 and she corrected our mistake for us. Thank you for the update Angela.

Please remove me from your mailing roster, as I do not personally know anyone in your group. I want to confirm the date of Maxim E. Nugent's death was 9-19-1994. Just want to clear up the incorrect date of 1985 I have seen on your website.

Thank You,

 Angela Nugent

Email Message from Jewell McWilliams, Widow of Alva “Lee” McWilliams, “B” Btry 320 1951-54. Jewell hadn’t been able to open the email version of the Newsletter and I had sent a message to see if she had received the hard copy.

Thank you for the note Rodger. I forgot to let you know. I have had a real rough time since right before Thanksgiving. I lost a sister-in-law and then my oldest son was discovered to have cancer on a tonsil. He just got back from Houston and MDA Cancer center where he had radiation. He is home now and as far as we can see will be all right.  Will have to have check ups for 5 years. Then along came the middle one needing 3 by passes they thought. He ended up having 3 stents put in instead.

Thanks, just thought I would let you know.

 March 02 2006

Was checking old file cards today and ran across a Henry C Roberts “M” 508 51-54 not found. I did some checking and found one in FL. Mrs. Roberts answered the phone and I proceeded to ask if her husband was a paratrooper at that time. He was and when switching phones got cut off.

We finally got reconnected and when I ask if he was in “M” Company he say’s heck no I was in the “Artillery”. He couldn’t remember which Btry he was in but said it had to be “B” or “C” as he knew it wasn’t “A”. I ask if he remembered any of the Sgt’s or Battery Commander.

He immediately said Sgt Euton, Henry had put in for a pass with Euton to go home to get his wife and Sgt Euton failed to turn it in. As a result he was in some trouble for a while as he apparently went home without the necessary pass.

During our discussion Henry mentioned that Wallace Lammons and he had come into the Service together and that they were going to a Class Reunion together in April. I told him that the Mini Reunion in Atlanta was also in April and hoped they were not the same week.

04 March 2006

I called Johnny Miller a few days ago asking him a lot of questions about “B” Btry Troops not yet found and since John doesn’t like the computer he sends me a letter with his answers.

Dear Leone and Rodger,

You guys looked fit and well back in September and hope that’s still the same. Brrrrrrr, I hear it’s been cold in Badger Country. (Ed note we had some 14 degrees below Zero weather but only for a few days).

Our razorback temperatures range from daytime temp‘s of 65/75 degrees. It’s a great time to be in the Natural State, but please don’t inquire in July and August!!! “Smile”.

Emma’s new email address is: EmmaJugi@comcast.net  Jugi is the sweet substitute for grandmother. All our grandchildren call her Jugi. The do have more revealing names for me. “Smile again”

Leone I hope you’re well and happy. Cook Rodg a pot of Dried Beans. I love all beans.

Rodg, I think Capehart’s given name was William (pretty sure). Two boys (Ed note, weren’t we all at that time) from Louisiana—Bailey’s given name was Alfred. Not to be confused with “Beatle” Bailey, a Sfc, Mess Sgt., I lost track of him. The other Cajun was Courvell, first name Ron/ Ronald. (Very Sure.) Hardesty was another of those Oklahoma boys and he talked with a slight lisp. All of these guys were from Oklahoma. Ed Miller, Bill Billingsly. Presto Bond, Dardis Chechowsky,

I’m not sure where Charles Miller was from. Carl Near and Robert “Bob” Burns were from Ohio. I hope I have been more help than confusing. Your old paratrooper buddy,

Johnny

March 07 2006

This is an email received after I sent out the notice that Dale Doucette had passed away. This was typical Dale. Always concerned about every one else and making sure you were well taken care of. Charlotte helped Leone with the Registration Table many times over the years.

The email is from Mary (Buster) Corrigan and her son Patrick Buster and how Dale touched them when meeting for their very first time at the Clarksville Reunion.

Rodger,
Since the 2005 reunion was the first one we had
attended, we're not real sure of the names of all the
people we did talk to but we do think Dale and
Charlotte are the people who did talk to us quite a
lot during those days.  I just wanted to ask you if
Charlotte is the lady who we were told by her husband that she has Alzheimer’s?  If so, we do remember them.
They were such nice people and we felt so bad after
reading your e-mail.  They had said they hoped they
would see us at the next reunion.  He was so concerned and worried about her condition at that time.
Thanks,
Mary & Patrick

Father Philip G McConville, Chaplain 320th/508th Ft Benning,GA. HQHQ Company 1951-1953

I called Father Philip G McConville several days ago inquiring if he had any information about a partial Newspaper Clipping I have. The clipping told of a group from the 320 AFA that built a church in Union Springs AL. We had a long, very interesting visit and the subject of a parade in Union Springs, AL came up (I think this was in conjunction with the completing and dedication of the Church).  Father McConville thought one of the Artillery Lt’s met a girl from Union Springs that day and eventually married her. Does any one know who this Lt is???

Letter from Marion A Fannon  “B” Btry 320

Hello Rodg

I hope you and Boss Lady are ok and have survived this unusual winter. I think of you all every time I see the National Weather Forecast as the snowstorms pass through your part of the country.

I’ve had some health problems but am doing all right. Was diagnosed 3rd of Feb with Lung Cancer but was a false alarm. The X-Ray Techs were looking at scar tissue on previously broken ribs. It was a great relief for me and my family and friends to find it was a false alarm. I had some minor Surgery at the VA Hospital in Johnson City, TN yesterday

I got to do quite a bit of hunting this past season. Bear, Wild Hog and Raccoon. I also have a pack of Coyote Hounds. Coyotes are plentiful and are great to chase with hounds. They either catch them or run them in to dens or holes.

Guess you have heard GT Wright had Heart Surgery. He called me a few weeks ago. He seems to be doing all right now.

I correspond occasionally with Charlie Loveland. He is having some vision problems but seemed to be in good spirit.

I’ve been doing a lot of Baby Sitting since my son got custody of my only Grandson. I have watched a lot of cartoons and now know most of the characters by their first names.

I will make every effort to attend our next reunion. I just need to know when and where. Hopefully it will be in Ft Campbell, KY.

I just wanted to touch base with you as it has been a long time.

Take care of yourself and Leone. We still have a lot of living to do.

Sincerely, M A Fannon

“AIRBORNE”

Thanks for the letter Marion. It has been a while since we last visited. The next Ft Campbell Reunion is the last full weekend of September 2007.

PS I visited with Garland at the Static Line Awards in Atlanta, GA. He was the Trooper of the year for one of his Viet Nam groups. rodg

28 March 2006 “A” Btry info.

I called Gordon John Swazey “A” Btry 55-56 in Brownsvill, TX while checking through old file cards today. I visited Gordon about 10 or 12 years ago while I was still driving truck. Gordon is having a long fight with circulation problems. He has had a series of bi-passes and had to have a leg removed do to these same problems. Gordon said he still gets out and around and can still drive his car.

He was originally from Maine and I don’t think we ever discussed what took him to Brownsville. His address is; 41 Winter Haven Lane, Brownsville, TX 78526-9501, Ph 956-831-9017.

I visited by phone with Theodore "Ted" L Guthrie RR#4 Box 1351 Wheatland, MO 95779 phone 417-282-5066 a week or so back. He was trying to make the last reunion in Clarksville but missed it.

Don Dowdy had asked me about, and I found M/Sgt Joseph Chickini information in the Social Security Death index. It showed he passed away in GA in July 1982.  I then tracked his son Michael Chickini down in Warner Robins, Ga. Michael's address is 120 Timberlea Dr, Warner Robins, GA 31088-7428 Ph 478-929-8456 email address   chickini@cox.net

I also talked to Lt Frank Chamberlain in Atlanta, GA a while back. Frank was only with us a short while in Japan. He was brought back to the States to Coach the Olympic Swimming Team.

If you have any news, deceased information, or anything to share with the rest of the Troops please send it to me so it can be printed in the next Newsletter. I’m always looking for information on Troopers not yet found.

I had an Infantry Trooper email me recently wanting to know if I had an address on his friend. I told him I had nothing on him and had had never even heard his name before. It seems he came into the service after the Ft Benning Yearbook was made up and got out before the Ft Campbell Yearbook was printed. I found him instantly and found three more guys that all came in at the same time.

28 March 2006 “SVC” Btry info

I recently made contact with Clyde A Hancock Svc Btry in Concord, NC. Address is 4620 Manteo Dr, Concord, NC 28025 Ph 704-786-5479. Son Allen's Email address is:  uncleallen@webkorner.com  Allen will print and give his dad these messages.

I was just looking at my notes and I have that Clyde was dispatcher for the MP Company. This could very well be a mistake, as I don't think Clyde went to Japan with us. I guess he could have been in Ft Campbell as they set up an MP Company of 27 or so MP's several months early that went on the Advance party to Japan. After we got to Japan they added the rest of the Company MP's from each unit.

Clyde, PLEASE fill us in on correct time of service and anything you would like to add to this.

If Dale Doucette was still with us he could straighten this out in a hurry as he remembered all these little bits of info.

If you want to contact Dales family I'm sure the Email address is still good.

 cjl-doucette@msn.com

I have also located Herbert H Rhodes Svc Btry 320 in Mulberry, KS but have not talked to him. I talked to a cousin and he said Herb is living with a son somewhere just out of Mulberry but no idea where. He said he has seen Herb at the Post Office several times and suggested I send a letter to Herb, % General Delivery, Mulberry, KS. I sent Herb a Newsletter and it hasn’t come back so it must have worked. We will simply have to wait for him to reply. If any of you want to send a letter to Herb send to:

 Herbert H Rhodes

Mulberry, KS 66756

I also have a few other things working at this time. If you can add any information to anything 320th please let me know.

28 March 2006

I reread the Nov 1998 320th Newsletter several days ago and ran across some old newspaper clippings that were printed in it.

One of these clippings was about a young man that enlisted in the Army in July 1950 at the age of 18. By early 1951 he was in Korea and his gun position was over run. He was taken Prisoner and spent three months being marched from S Korea to N Korea and then 30 months in a Prison Camp.

Two months after being released from the Prison Camp he reenlisted in the Airborne for three years. After completion of Jump School he was assigned to "B" Btry 320th in Ft Benning and then moved to Campbell with the Regiment in 1954. There he stayed until we Gyro'd to Japan in 1955. He then went to the 11th and then to the 101st.

I used some of my new search techniques on him and tracked him from Philadelphia, to Sierra Vista, AZ where he retired from Fort Huachuca in the 70's. Al and I had a nice visit by phone today. Give Al a call, send him a letter or an email and welcome him to the 320th FA Association.

He address info is:

Leone and I attended the Static line Awards in Atlanta, GA 19/23 April and had a great time.

As a result of attending the Static Line awards I received another Ft Benning, GA Jump School roster from George O’Connor.  I have located many more of the 508 Infantry Troopers with this information but none were Artillery.

18 August 2006

This Email from Col Ret Art Deverell in reply to one of my many questions about the differences in the way Military units are named.

Rodger,

I had two tours in RVN, The first tour was as the Senior Military Advisor to the Tuyen Duc Province Chief, II Corps, Rvn with province Headquarters in Dalat, Concurrently, I was the 36th US Advisory Team Chief, MACV, from Dec '67 to Dec '68. There is no e-mail address that I'm aware of.

I sign-up for another tour to command the 2nd Bn, 11th Artillery (155mm) 101st Abn Division which I commanded from Dec'68 to July'69. The 2nd Bn 11th Artillery is now assigned to the 25th "Lighting" Division in Hawaii. I believe they recently returned from Iraq, Some of my troopers have e-mailed the unit in Iraq, But I do not have their e-mail.

I have cc a copy of this e-mail to Walter Tangel, who was B/2/11 XO during my command; He has been active currently with the battalion and may have an e-mail address for both of us.

If you believe that the space before /2/320 refer to subordinate units or batteries then HHB/2/320 means Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Bn, 320th and HQ/2/320 means Headquarters Battery, 2,d Bn, 320th. and they both have the same meaning!

Others (and I am one of them,) who likes to believe that HQ/2/320th means HQ 2d Bn, 320th or Battalion Headquarters. But you really have to understand the context in which it is written to be sure.

I do not feel that I helped you much with HHB and HQ.I suggest you check in with SGM Joe Montoya or M/Sgt Bill Ashcraft to be get the correct answer.

Best wishes to you and Leone.

Art

I am on the mailing list of Jan Bos in Nijmegen, Holland. Jan is a writer and a historian in everything to do with WWII. I receive many such great articles from him and many contain pictures of then and now.

His wife’s name is Ans and is mentioned in the Article.

Jan Bos

Nijmegen, Holland

Dear friends,

Time to remember again.

Last week you had 9/11, the date that both you and I will not forget. American again went to war against terrorism.

I compare the date with Sunday 7 December 1941 when the United States was also dragged into the war. When Ans and I witnessed the highjacked planes entering the WTC, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania, we stayed tuned, we were shocked and I cried. Now five years later we again witnessed the ceremonies.

Coming Sunday it will be exactly 62 years ago that the 82nd Airborne Division jumped on the fields around Groesbeek [DZ N and DZ T] and Overasselt [DZ O], after the last parachute serial [376th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion] landed on DZ N, 50 Waco gliders delivered the first vehicles, medical supplies, extra ammunition etc. The troopers went out to their targets.

Monday 18 September mark the day of heavy fighting in the Nijmegen-Groesbeek-Overasselt-Grave area. 450 Waco gliders landed on the fields around Groesbeek, delivering the 456th Parachute, 319th and 320th Glider FA Battalions, plus 80th AA/AT Battalion.

Tuesday 19 September resupply missions were scrubbed in England, bad weather, over here in Holland was perfect weather. Wednesday 20 September mark heavy fighting in Mook, Nijmegen and Beek area, all the parachute regiments were heavily involved in the fighting. The day also mark the famous Waal River crossing by the 504th CT. Saturday 23 September 1944 finally the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment came in on LZ O at Overasselt, the fresh troops were rushed to the battlefront.

On 26 September 1944 a total of 209 C-47 landed on an emergency field in the old bent of the Maas River, west of Grave, they delivered supplies and evacuated wounded troopers and POWs [who remembers this and who may have some pictures], the battle raged on for several months until mid-November.

On Saturday 16 September 2006 British and Polish paratroopers jumped from C-130 Herucles planes on the Ginkels Heath, west of Arnhem-Oosterbeek, among them were also six British veterans!!

On Sunday 17 September 2006 a plaque will be unveiled in remembrance of the crew of a C-47 that was shot down over DZ T. Paratroopers from B Compnay 508th had just jumped from the plane. The crew chief was able to bail out and the remainder of the crew was killed. Several veterans and family were present at the unveiling. I will take several pictures and send them soon.

Several veterans of the 82nd Airborne Division and Mrs. Barbara Gavin - Fountleroy and her husband Clancy Fountleroy were visiting the Nijmegen-Groesbeek area; they were present at several ceremonies

On Tuseday 19 September 2006 a ceremony will be held at the Waal River crossing memorial on the north bank of the Waal River, will take some pictures and send them soon.

                    SICK CALL

30 October 2006 David Cash “B” Btry 51-54

I was re-reading the March 2006 Static Line Newspaper today looking for some information. I had made a note to myself when I received the paper to call David. He had renewed his subscription to the S/L and it jogged my feeble memory that we hadn’t talked for a long time. As you can tell that note is with several other items that I can’t find. I called him today 30 Oct 2006 and had a nice visit. David said he has had a long string of health problems.

David has had heart attacks, strokes, valve replacement and a pacemaker and numerous other health problems. If I understood David correctly all of these were one at a time problems stretched out over a number of years.

He sounded great today and he say’s he is doing well. We may also have email contact with him soon. I will update you if we do.

Delmos Hickmot “B” 55/56

I also talked to Delmos today and he has had a Stroke since we last visited just prior to the 2005 Reunion. He can no longer fly his Hot Air Balloon and they have sold it. We do have a memory of their Hot Air Balloon in their email address. The Balloon was the Kiwi Pop and Delmos and Sally’s email address is: kiwipopdelsal@aol.com

Ernest “Skip” Myler “C” Btry 54/55

Hi Rodger,

It’s been great hearing about the 320th again. I’ve been in contact with Paul Ott and we reminisced over the phone for an hour. He brought to mind many events that I had forgotten. Before Ft Campbell we had gone through Advance Basic at Camp Chaffee, Ft Smith, AR together. I’ve also been conversing by phone with Dexter Charlton out in W Memphis, AR. Again we recalled many good times together. I had gone home with Dexter to W Helena, AR for a number of weekends- really great times.

I’m enclosing $10.00 for 320th Membership and $20.00 for the Memorial. I really appreciate the time you spent talking with me. I would also join the 508th Chapter but so far unable to locate any of my Military Documents that verify I was with the outfit. Do you collect articles about the 320th and 508th? I have several I would be glad to send along. Thanks for all you and your wife have done to keep the guys in touch.

Regards, Skip ( Note, Skip I would like to have Photo Copies of anything you have but not the original)

(Please Note)

As all of you know this Newsletter is way late in coming out. I guess I’m getting old and tired. I need some help and have had offers from our 60’s guys to take over some more of the work. What I would REALLY LIKE TO SEE IS, a volunteer from each Battery for each time period such as what Johnny Miller does to make some calls and keep us updated.

In order to make better use of my time, I am going to ask that for you with email to PLEASE limit the Forwards to one per week and it is now YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to keep me informed of address changes. I have over 1,500 email addresses and spend many hours trying to get new address info.

Thank you,

Mission completed…Airborne!!

I am happy to report that the 320th Airborne Field Artillery has a permanent memorial monument placed on the walkway leading up to the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville, NC. It is gratifying to see, and have been a part of, the quick and unselfish response given by the 320th AFA (and 508th Red Devils) to this project.

The motion was presented by Tom Walinski (‘63-‘66), and seconded by several members, at our last reunion in Clarksville, TN. The motion was then passed by member vote. Tom reported that the cost would be approx. $3,300. As the discussion concerning the best way to request donations began, Dennis Bubnar (’63-’65) stood and said we had the core membership here at the Reunion and donations should start here and now. He then threw in the first donation and the hat was passed. The response was fantastic…as this excerpt from an article Tom wrote for the last newsletter shows:

During our business meeting at the just concluded reunion in       Clarksville we voted to place a monument at the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville, NC.  This will be a permanent memorial to all who have served, are serving, or will serve in the 320th Artillery.

The monument is granite and will be engraved with the unit crest, unit name and other information as we decide.  It will be grouped along with many others already in place at the entryway walk of the museum. The cost of the monument is approximately   $3200. On-going maintenance will be provided by the Museum.

We decided by vote that the way this monument would be paid for would be through donations. An initial donation collection was taken at the business meeting and we received $685 from the approx. 20 members present. Later that afternoon one member donated $500!

At the banquet that evening we again asked for donations from all the 320th members present.  An additional $760 was donated. Others have donated since the reunion and our total donated to date is $2387.  A little math will yield a conclusion that we still need donations totaling $813.

Shortly after the January newsletter went out we reached our goal of $3,300 for the monument. Rodg wrote the check and Tom coordinated with the Museum people to get the monument made. We were told to expect about a six-month waiting period for the monument to be made and placed. They weren’t kidding! Finally, Tom received word that the monument was finished…and it was placed in mid-Oct. Not bad…from idea to granite in a little over one year! Thanks, again, to all who helped make this a reality!!

Now we need to dedicate OUR Monument. To this end, the Board is working on getting a group of 320th troopers to the Museum in Fayetteville for a dedication ceremony. The Museum has said that we can do this whenever we choose, now that the Monument is in place…there is no time limit. If we give them a heads up, they will coordinate with Ft. Bragg to provide a color guard unit for the ceremony.

What we need are date suggestions and a pretty firm commitment from anyone who wants to attend…the more, the better. If we get enough response, we could make a ‘mini’ reunion out of it. In any case, whoever goes will have a good time with fellow Troopers! The Airborne & Special Operations Museum is unique and dedicated to the history and accomplishments of units such as our 320th AFA…you’ll never have a better reason to visit! See you there…AIRBORNE!

Recruiting new Members

We have been trying to reach out to more of the Vietnam Era, and more current, 320th men and women. We, as an organization, need to identify, locate, and recruit these newer Troopers into the Association to keep it vital and assure its continuance into the future. As everyone knows, Rodg is the champ in this endeavor and has worked long and hard for our Association. He can’t do it alone…we ALL need to help in this effort. Please make every effort to locate people from your time with the 320th and tell them about the Association…recruit them…send their contact info to Rodger Jacobson rodleone@centurytel.net . This is very important for our future!

As I was getting the 320th Monument article together I received a letter that has to do with this very subject, I thought I would share it with you.

October 4, 2006

Dear Shannon:

Please send me necessary materials and information so I may join the 320th Airborne FA Association. I saw in Don Lassen’s “Static Line” that you are the point of contact for the Association.

I served in the 2nd Battalion, 320th AFA at Fort Campbell, and then with the 1st Brigade (Sep), 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam from January 1964 to June 1966. COL Art Lombardi was my first Battalion commander. I understand that he was (or perhaps still is) the Honorary Colonel of the Regiment.

I was S4 of the Battalion from June 1964 until November 1965 and then commanded A Battery, 2/320th FA from November 1965 until May 1966. At two reunions of the 1st Brigade, I met COL Bill Madden, who commanded the 2nd Battalion in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967. I heard at the last reunion that he is in poor health.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Willing and Able!

Very truly yours,

David B. Smith, LTC (Ret)

That’s how people find us and we find them…thru word of mouth and info in publications. This particular letter was rather cool because LTC Smith (and COL Lombardi) were both at the 320th during my time. I have forwarded his contact info to Rodg and I’m sure we have a new member in the Association. If you would like to contact LTC Smith, this is his info.

Searching for a Buddy

This is how Jack Johnston HHB/2/64-67 found Andy Ross. Jack knew what High School Andy had attended. He first found a Website for Andy’s old High School Class and found a Classmate that gave him Andy’s Middle Name. He then used Ancestry.com and sent them this message.

I am searching for Andrew Randolph Ross that was in the 1962 graduating class Pasadena Ca. High School. I was in the army with him and best friends in 1964, 320th Artillery 101st Airborne Division. Is this the same Andy? I can e-mail a snapshot picture of him. Please let me know one way or another. His high school alumni are also searching for him. Ancestry.com passed the message on to Andy’s widow Ruth and this is the reply he received from her.

How nice to hear form someone that remembers Andy. He was in the 101st at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. I would love to see a snapshot of him, as he was the love of my life. We married in 1967 and have three wonderful children. Had he lived, he would have loved six wonderful grandchildren. Would love to hear more about him.

Jack’s Reply

Hi Ruth;

I have been looking for Andy for many years off and on since mid 1970's.

I recently found that some of our old army friends have formed a group for the 320th Artillery Viet Nam era paratroopers. They have reunions every 2 years in Clarksville TN. just out side Fort Campbell. I have been putting more energy into searching for old troopers and through Andy’s Pasadena High school class of1962 and other searches I finally found you.

What happened to Andy? Illness,? Accident? Grand kids are great, you get to spoil them and not have to suffer the consequences. We have 3. My wife Edith and I have been married 35 years and have one daughter 34.

Andy was a great guy, I don't remember him using a curse word or saying anything bad about anyone the 2 years that I knew him. You could not help but love the guy.

One funny story, I went with him to Memphis to pick up a 52 MG convertible that I think his parents shipped to him from California. I think his sister lived in Memphis at the time. Well, anyway we had no sooner got outside the city limits headed back to Fort Campbell 200 miles to go when the car started stopping.

We figured out that if we banged on the electric fuel pump the car would start again. So for 200 miles every time the car would stall I would stand up lean over the windshield and bang on the fuel pump. People probably thought we were nuts beating up on that old car while going down the 2-lane highway.

I left a message on a phone # 707-458-3205, is that still a good number? If it is what would be a good time to call you? I would like to put you in touch with Andy's old PHS 62 classmate and our 320th Arty 101st director so you can get the newsletter and other things you may not have known about Andy. All good I assure you. There is no charge for it.

I will need your e-mail address to send the snap shots to you. I am running out of room so I have to go, lots more later.

Thanks,

Jack Johnston

 Hi Jack.

I am Andy’s middle son. People often say I look just like him. I even had an instructor in college who was Andy’s childhood friend and recognized me by my last name and likeness.

I have that MG in my garage now. I plan to restore the car eventually but I have been spending my spare time on my hobbies photography and flying light aircraft. Makes sense because my dad also loved photography and airplanes (only he liked jumping out).

Anyway, I would love to have scans of any old photos you have of my dad. Also would love to hear more stories. I am starting a digital gallery and photos of dad would be great additions. Unfortunately my dad passed away before I met my wife so she only knows him in photographs and stories.

Kind Regards,

 Mike

Email from Jack Johnston HHB/2/64-67 to Tom “Waldo” Walinski, 320 Assoc Vice Chairman

Hi Waldo;

Andrew R Ross born12 Aug. 1943 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada died 23 Oct. 1992 Crescent City Ca. Andy was a liaison RTO with HHB 2/320th in 63-65

I was able to locate Andy's family through ancestry.com and a big help from Andy's classmate at Pasadena High school class of 1962, William Mooberry who gave me Andy's middle name "Randolph". After that things started to fall in to place.

I called and spoke to Andy's wife of 25 years Ruth Ann in Crescent City Ca. Ruth told me that after Andy got out of the army he went to college and got his degree. He became a hospital lab technician and later manager of lab operations and that is how they ended up in Crescent City.

Not long after moving to Crescent City he was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. Andy and Ruth fought a five-year battle against the disease and Andy died with in months after a bone marrow transplant that developed in to complications.

Andy and Ruth have 3 adult children David, Michael and Lisa. Lisa has the worlds most important job that of being a MOM. Michael is a construction engineer for a large company. Staff Sargent David Ross US ARMY combat engineers currently somewhere in Iraq. He enlisted in 1990.

Andy and Ruth have 6 grandchildren but tragically Andy did not live to see them.

Ruth is a retired middle school teacher and has remarried, now Ruth York.

Ruth would like to hear from Andy's old Army buddies, 1-707-458-3205. ryork1@charter.net

Michael would like to here from his dad's army buddies and would especially like to receive any scanned photos of his dad for a digital slide show he is putting together. He is at mross@amgen.com

I don't have a contact yet for Lisa or Sergeant Ross but they could be contacted through their mom I am sure.

Again a big thank you to Bill Mooberry, Pasadena High School class of 1962.

Waldo, after you read this please forward it to those who knew Andy and to Rodger Jacobson.

Thank you, Jack Johnston

Follow up on Andy Ross.

Personal note from Leone and Rodger

Leone and I have had the privilege to meet most of you at some time or another in the past twenty years at one of the many Mini Reunions we have hosted. We, or perhaps I should say I, finally got worn out and had to slow down a little. The two and three mini reunions in one year is to much and will no longer happen.

We will still help host the Biannual Reunion in Clarksville, TN if that is what the Officers and Membership require. I personally think we are missing the boat by not hosting the Reunion in a different location each and every reunion.

The Clarksville Holiday Inn told us we would have a new Hotel for the 2007 reunion and it will not happen. We received many complaints about the condition of the hotel after the 2005 reunion. With all the great properties available all over the USA  I can‘t personally see any reason to continue this course.

Leone and I belong to a Reunion Planners Organization and have attended many of their conferences at our own expense. We learn how to conduct reunions, get to visit and do on site inspections from several to a half dozen different hotel properties in each conference location. We are introduced to the CVB (Convention and Visitors Bureau) at each location as well as meet personally with other vendors looking for our reunion business from across the country.

Let’s give some serious thought to this subject. I am speaking for Leone and I only and not for any of the other Association Officers. I do know that when we started this Association 20 years ago that we set up guidelines and one of them was a reunion in Ft Campbell, KY-Clarksville, TN every other year.

We have undergone  many changes since then. We didn’t know when I started looking for those first 127 guys in 1987 that we would have a data base of  2,191 Troopers by 2006 and growing each day.

Please reply to this subject in writing and give us permission to print it in the Newsletter under your name.

Thank You,

Rodger and Leone Jacobson
