August 04-2003 The June, July, August Newsletter is in the mail and I’ve cleaned up the remnants of another hectic week. I am now making phone calls to our 320th Troopers that are behind on their dues; I’m checking to see if they want to update or be dropped from the Newsletter mailing.

My first call is to my old HQ Btry ‘54-56 Commo Sgt Tony Cieslac in Security, CO. Tony has been suffering with Vertigo problems as many people have. I can think of about ten others including my mother and myself. Sorry to say Tony asked to be dropped. I hope I don’t get to many of these replies.

Stan Fuesel was “A” Btry Recon and Survey Officer and Bn Staff in ‘51-53. Stan says to drop him also as he doesn’t travel well. Wow, I’m not sure I like this. Two cancellations in a row.

My next call is to HQ Btry ‘55-56 Trooper Jim Hatfield in MI. Jim says he will up date and try to make the reunion in September. He is scheduled for a knee replacement soon but expects to be in good shape by then. Thanks, Jim I feel better already.

Next call is to Delmos Hickmott “B” Btry 55-56 in Odessa, TX and a good news bad news situation. Del will get updated but can’t come to the reunion, as he is a hot air balloon pilot. He is scheduled every year in Albuquerque, NM the 1st week in October so is on his way to NM while our reunion is taking place.

Elroy Finke “B” Btry 54-56 is next and says yes he will update and try real hard to make it to reunion. Thanks Elroy, I’m feeling a lot better about these calls. Made several more with no answer and will try again tomorrow.

8-19-03 We received Elroy’s dues and Registration today. He will see you at the reunion.          8-21-03 We just received word that Maj Gen. Ret. Joseph Fant’s wife; Carolyn, will have to cancel out on the reunion. She is scheduled for visits to her eye doctor daily for several weeks for treatment during that time.

8-28-03 We just received word that Walter Stacey from Schuler Falls, NY has to cancel out on the reunion. Walter is an All American Member of the 508 Chapter and was in HQ/2 in 51-52 and then to Korea. I think he is scheduled for surgery. Walter is a personal friend of mine and we have attended several reunions together. Walter suffered extensive injuries in Korea, but is doing pretty well. We will be looking forward to seeing Walter at our next reunion.

            9-03-03 Recovering;

We just received a call from Dan Sharpe “A & Svc” Btry 55-56 in Cayce, SC. He sent info that the only 320 AFA CMH Recipient, Webster Anderson passed away of Cancer 8-30-03. Information in Taps Column.

Dan is recovering from a bad truck accident he was in. Dan drives and delivers trucks to dealers around the country. On one of his trips a small car lost control, hit Dan’s rear wheels, and spun him around into the guardrail. He then flipped all the way over the guardrail and into the path of oncoming traffic. He was struck by an 80,000 lb dump truck loaded with gravel and his truck was reduced to a pile of scrap iron.

A partial list of injuries Dan received is a torn rotator cuff, broken shoulder, and five broken ribs in back. They had to repair some damage to an earlier surgery and repair an aneurysm. The good news is that he has recovered enough to try and make the reunion. Airborne Troopers are tough.

9-05-03 We received a call from J. W. Sullivan this AM that he will have to cancel out on reunion. Leone and I were just going out the door when he called so didn’t find out what happened.

9-10-03 I just got word that Jim Mongoven, one of our Med Co troopers had to cancel out on the Reunion. His wife has Parkinson’s and has suffered some severe set backs recently. Understandably, he doesn’t want to leave her at a time like this. I called to tell him we would refund his registration fee but he wanted it split with the 508th and 320th as a donation. Thanks Jim, it will be put to good use.

While visiting he told me we had a mutual friend in the 320th from HQ Btry, William “Bill” Turner. He told me how he and Bill had both gone to the same college before service, enlisted in the Army together as “Two Year RA’S” - as I did.             They then went to basic, and jump school in Fort Campbell. When we got to Japan Jim went to Camp Chick to the medics and Bill to Camp Wood. They met again on the boat home and stayed in contact.

They went back to college together and finally after graduating went different directions staying in occasional contact. Bill is still caring for his mother on a daily basis so won’t make the reunion.

(Ed Note) Leone and I were in FL visiting about ten years ago and Bill and I got together for a very nice visit.

9-11-03 Dr Rawitch and I have visited several times recently and Joe Perlow has been part of the conversation. This is due to the fact that we haven’t been able to contact him by phone. Joe’s newsletter has been going somewhere and not sent back.

Well, Dr. Rawitch just called and said he has made contact with Joe’s old podiatrist partner and found out Joe is now in Palm Springs, CA. We will relay Joes new address and phone # when we get it.

9-13-03 Got a note today from Marion Fannon “B” Btry 55-56 that he will have to cancel out on the reunion. Marion is a very busy man as he is the AMVETS Commander of Post #7 in Morristown, TN. Marion says to tell everyone hello, and to “Hoist one for him.”

9-19-03 Bill and Renate Brannon Hq 54-56 called a few minutes ago and wished everyone well and to say hi! Bill is having problems with his knees but he and Renate are doing great otherwise. The kidney transplant Bill had is working great. They said to greet everyone at the reunion but will do here also. Thanks Bill and Renate for ALWAYS staying in touch.

(Ed note;) Ray and Sherry Soule, and the Brannons were out to lunch together recently. Jim and Dorothy Jochims, and Hank and Mary Lou Groat have also visited the Brannons over the past several years. Leone and I also have plans to see them next March on our travels.

9-21-03 We just received a call from Vincent Cain that his wife just had a stroke on Friday. She is doing well at this time, but will be canceling out on reunion. Vincent still wants to come for a short visit since he only lives four hours away. Vincent started out in the Infantry and was an original cadre in “E” Co in 1951 when the 508 was reactivated. He then went to OCS and spent the rest of his career in the artillery. (Ed note) Vincent, understandably, didn’t make reunion either.

9-21-03 I’ve been doing some preparation for the reunion and moved a stack of old file cards. I dropped a few of them on the floor and when I picked them up the top card was Rorie, W. L. “C” Btry 320th 54-55. I had no other info from anyone else on the card. I had entered his name from under his picture in the Silver 508 yearbook.

At the time I dropped the cards I was sitting in front of my computer listening to a CD of Gospel music. I went to Switchboard.com, put W L Rorie in and clicked search. Well up pops W L Rorie Jr. I called and told him who I was looking for and was told it was his dad I was looking for. He gave me Bills phone # in Foley, AL and we were visiting in minutes. I would say the Lord led us to the right place at the right time.

The sad news is Bill is paralyzed from his waist down due to the same aneurysm that just killed John Ritter. Bill was much luckier and lived through it. He is confined to a wheel chair and doesn’t travel too far. If you would like to contact Bill his address is William L Rorie 10540 Cub Lane, Foley, AL 36535; Phone # is 251-943-2061

Bill also gave me information on several other guys so may find a few more.

9-22-03 We received a call from Mrs. Sonley Porter “C“ Btry 320th 54-56. Vera and her son Sonley Jr. were planning on attending the reunion and had to cancel. They live in the Newport News, VA area and still don’t have electricity back on yet. They only had minor water problems and no structure damage.

9-23-03 Tony Trent “B” 320 and Spt 508 55-56 just called with the sad news that his mom just passed away. She was eleven days short of 100 years of active living. She had her own home and escaped serious damage from the Hurricane. She had been out raking up leaves and doing general cleanup after the storm, and was feeling fine. Had sat down in her chair to watch TV and took a nap and passed away in her sleep. Tony our thoughts and prayers are with you.

            9-30-03 Reunion Update.

Leone and I just returned from the reunion in Clarksville, TN and spending a few days off in Nashville. I’m having computer problems again and don’t know what will happen next or how far it will go.

This is a report on those that cancelled out on the reunion and whatever information I have concerning them not already reported.

Lawrence & Glenda Ashlock (598 Eng 51-54) for Lawrence’s back surgery.

Joseph & Judy Evett (427 AAA 55-56) and guests Charles & Glenda Smith had to cancel as Smiths were in an auto accident. Evetts can’t drive so they had no transportation.

Burney Jetton, (598 Eng 55-56) fell and broke his arm. Cora Lane widow of Billy (Hq 54-56) and daughter cancelled through Joe Montoya so I don’t know what happened there.

Paul (B Btry 55-56) and Lois Lavendar and daughter Paula Norton cancelled. Lois has cancer and is undergoing chemo treatments.

Harry Meyer, (E Co 55-56) had heart surgery.

Bob (Med Co 55-56) and Marilyn Rukamp had to cancel due to Bob having back surgery.

Earl Mariz (B Co 51-54) and wife Edith received call at 5 AM as they were leaving for the reunion that Earls brother passed away.

Bill and Sandy McCreedy (Hq 320 63-65) reason unknown at this time.

I’m sure I’ve missed a few of you and I apologize and will continue to try to do better.

THANK YOU

At this time Leone and I, and I’m sure each of you, would like to extend our thanks to Joe and Sue Montoya, GT Wright and Debbie Evans for all their work bringing off this great reunion. Can you imagine opening your home, feeding and entertaining 200 guests?

We would also like to thank Dr. and Betty Rawitch for all the time, effort, and expense they went through to make possible the memorable tape of our time in Japan. If you want to purchase a copy of this tape or DVD see the Quartermaster section for the information on page # 8.

As a side note, I would also like to mention that I made a number of calls to Ft Campbell to set up the audio-visual equipment for Dr Rawitch’s film. As I got closer to finding the necessary equipment a nice young lady said I should talk to Miss Debbie as she was in charge of that department. It turns out she was also our very gracious co-host with GT Wright for the great country western bash at GT’s Country Estate on Friday evening of our reunion.

            10-29-2003

Note with his Lifetime Dues from Earl Gilman “B” Btry 1951-54. Sorry about not making the reunion in September. Doris took a big hit in March with a double heart valve replacement. The summer was a little touchy with the surgery and her older sister passing away. We are back in Florida again and things are looking up.

We saw some Troopers dropping at McDill Air Base the other day and brought back a lot of old memories. Sincerely, Earl and Doris Gilman.

            11-8-2003

Leone and I just received a phone call from an excited Harold Riner. He was channel surfing on his TV the other night and ran across a program about the V/N War and some of its troopers. He is positive he saw a shot of S/Sgt Clarence Lyke JR. from Hq Btry 55-56. To find out for sure; Harold ordered a tape of the program.

(Ed note on Sgt Lyke) Many of you may not know this; but Sgt Lyke was also in Hq-Hq Co 508 Infantry at the Reactivation in June 1951.

            11-24-2003

Leone and I just returned from New York where we did site inspections for a possible Mini Reunion in May 2004. We visited Buffalo and Corning and will make our decision based on the return information we receive from the hotels on rates and banquet prices, etc.

We also inspected two sites in Ohio for a future mini reunion. We are also in the process of negotiating with Ft. Benning and Columbus, GA for a possible September 2004 mini reunion. Many of our 51-54 Troopers have never been to a reunion and we hope this will draw them out to visit their old friends.

Leone and I will be in Albuquerque, NM to attend a Reunion Planners Convention in late February. We will also host a Mini Reunion in the Eugene, OR area in late 2004 if all works out.  These Mini Reunions are for all the 320th GFA & AFA from any time period and for all the Red-Devils from WWII to the present.

            12-21-2003

Leone and I have had a grand celebration with our family and some of the many friends we have made over the last 50 years. We were married 50 years ago on December 19,1953. Our children and grandchildren honored us with a full day, starting with church services and a family dinner. We then took family pictures and had an open house at our church devotional center. Over 125 friends and relatives honored us with their presence. What a day to remember!!!

Leone and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you that sent cards, emailed and called us wishing us Happy Holidays and Happy Anniversary on our 50th. You are the greatest.

            12-22, 2003

We just received a call from Bill and Renate Brannon in Tacoma, WA. Bill had a knee replacement done in early November and was only laid up a few days. Went right back to the Bingo hall and hardly had any problems at all.

            12-27, 2003

We received another call from Harold Riner a few minutes ago and he has received the National Geographic videotape he ordered. He is  positive it is Sgt Clarence Lyke Jr.

I immediately called Opal Lyke, Sgt Lykes step mother to tell her of the news.  I stopped and visited Opal several times when I was trucking as I have with many of you. Her daughter Jeanie now lives with her and although Opal’s health isn’t the best, she is still doing quite well for an 87-year-old lady.

Sgt Lyke was about eight or ten years older than Jeanie and her brother so they didn’t know him very well. He left home at an early age to join the service and wasn’t good about filling them in on his travels. Opal had kept a diary of his travels and service time until Sgt Lyke married Imogene Cummings.

Imogene had two children from her first marriage so Sarge had an instant family. Opal gave this diary to Imogene for her children to read. When Sgt Lyke passed away in Fayetteville in 1985 Imogene and her children moved to San Antonio, TX and haven’t been close since. The diary went with them.

Jeanie had asked in the newsletter several years ago for any of you that knew her brother to write of your experiences with him as a way to get to know more about him. She wanted to be able to pass this on to her children. The only ones to do so were Joe Montoya and Walter Ducharme and they should be commended for their efforts. Thanks from all of us Joe and Walt. Now let’ s see what the rest of us can do for Jeanie, her Mom and family. (Come on HQ Btry, Communications Section let’s lead the way.)

I will try to write my letter as soon as I get done with this Newsletter. In fact I have a couple of pictures I can include also. Speaking of pictures I think the Dr Rawitch videotape would be a great way to show what we did during his time with us in Japan. Your letters can be sent to:

            12-29, 2003

I left a message on Joe Rollins phone a few days after the California Earthquake. Joe called back this evening and reported only minor problems. Joe was shopping for groceries at the time and had his cart full except for one last item. As he went down the aisle everything began falling off of the shelves to the floor and the lights flickered. Naturally Joe was looking for an exit when someone decided to take charge of the situation.

This guy yelled for everyone to stay where they were. He then asked if anyone needed help, and for those of you that know Joe, he had already ascertained that there were no problems so Joes answer was “ Yeah, where the _ _ _ _ is the Cool Whip.”  I can just see them literally rolling in the aisles. Message from our newly elected Association Chairman Henry “Hank” Groat and wife Mary Lou:

Mary Lou and I have been fortunate enough to have been present at all of the reunions held at Ft. Campbell, KY. And, why not?

We tied the knot at a Chapel on Post in June of 1955, two weeks before we Gyroscoped to Japan. She says that I went on the "Honeymoon" and she stayed home and worked.

If you call what we did in downtown Kumamato City anything like a Honeymoon, I guess she may have been right, but I had Bob Welch always trying to keep me "chaste", right Bob??

We have lost quite a few of the original number, which makes our attendance all that much more important. I wasn't sure that I was going to be there after spending my 68th birthday in the emergency room with cardiac arrest. I understand some folks don't come back from that - someone upstairs likes us. I know I'm very GRATEFUL!!

It is especially gratifying to see the new 320th faces at the Reunion. How lucky we are that they are ready to donate their time to helping us out, too.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to chair the meetings, at least the last one, and thank Jack Damron for helping me. The off-year get-togethers are a lot of fun too; unfortunately Mary Lou and I have not been lucky enough to get to all of them. If possible we will try not to miss anymore; one of the major benefits of being "retired."

Hope everyone has had a Happy Holiday Season and that we all have a healthy, Happy New Year.

Sincerely, Hank Groat, Chairman

Bio from our newly elected Association Secretary, Robert “Bob” Runo:

I was born 12/09/43 in Detroit, MI. My mother, older sister and I lived with my grandparents in Detroit while my dad served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II. After the war we moved to Terre Haute, IN where my dad got a job teaching at Indiana State Teachers College, which is now Indiana State University.

In 1948 my dad took a teaching position with Roosevelt University in Chicago and we moved to Mt. Prospect, IL. I spent the rest of my young life growing up in Mt. Prospect and in the summer prior to my senior year in high school I met my wife to be, Jane on a blind date.

Upon graduating from high school in 1962 I enlisted in the Army. I went through basic at Ft. Knox, advanced infantry at Ft. Polk and jump school at Ft. Benning. When I arrived at the 101st a sergeant was calling out names with unit assignments, mine was for the 320th.

After the formation I went to the sergeant and said I'm infantry trained. He said there wasn't a mistake so to the 320th I went. That's when Joe Montoya got his hands on me and I haven't been the same since.

I spent a year in Headquarters Battery and then received orders for the 173rd on Okinawa. I was with B-3/319th and was on the initial deployment to Viet Nam with the 173rd.

In 1965 I left the Army, went back home and started my college education. In 1966 Jane and I got married. I graduated from Roosevelt University in 1970 and was hired by Sears, and moved to Indianapolis IN.

We have two boys Jim and Mike. Jim graduated from Indiana University and is a physician at Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN. Mike graduated from Ball State and is a sales representative for Black and Decker in the Chicago area.

I worked for Sears for 23 years in various management positions. In 1993 I opted for an early retirement. I then took a job with National Automotive Lines Inc. in Shelbyville, IN as their operations manager. In August of this year I retired so now every day of the week is Saturday.

Robert “Bob” Runo, Secretary

            Message from Joe Montoya

First off, I want to thank all of you that attended the September reunion. For those of you that couldn't make it please try to make the next one. The next Bi-Annual Reunion is scheduled for the last weekend of September 2005.

Some things happened, or didn't happen. It was my intention that all Redlegs be inducted into the Order of St Barbara and the wives be inducted into the Order of Molly Pitcher. There was a foul up with the Field Artillery Association and I only had 16 St Barbara Awards approved and no Molly Pitcher Awards.

It takes an Artillery Commander in the rank of Colonel to approve these awards. If there is not one in the area The CG at Ft Sill is the approving authority. As it turned out they let the paperwork sit on some ones desk and tried to play catch up at the last minute. Consequently they only approved those nominees in the grade of E-6 and above. None of the Molly Pitcher awards were approved. (Ed. Note; the Molly Pitcher award presented to Joan Ducharme was approved for the Peoria, IL Reunion in Oct 2002. Walter and Joan were unable to attend at that time so Award was held and presented at this reunion. RJ)

I apologize to all those that were expecting to receive awards and did not. If this mess in Iraq is settled the Division Artillery CO will be back in the area and we can do it right the next time. All at the reunion had a good time.

I am no longer the Chairman of the Association. We had a nearly complete change of officers at the meeting during the reunion. I have been replaced by Hank Groat, who I am sure will do a great job. I am however still an officer in the Association. During the meeting we eliminated the Sgt at Arms position and created a new officer position as the Liaison Officer. I will fill this position and will maintain contact with the active Regiment. In this position I will join the Regimental Association to better maintain contact with the active duty guys.

The Banner has been presented to the Regiment; I want to thank all who so generously contributed to the Banner fund. It now flies in front of Division Artillery HQ. (Editors note. We should get a picture of the banner for the next Newsletter.)

The Rear Detachment has been busy remodeling the Headquarters building. The brass Japanese Cannon we brought back from Japan in 1956 occupies a prominent spot just inside the front door. They used to display it outside but the weather takes its toll on those wooden wheels. It is now inside on a metal stand with no weight on the wheels and is polished regularly.

Since the Regiment deployed to Iraq there have been many command changes. Colonel Greer relinquished command to Colonel Martina and has a new assignment in Korea. SGM Mathurin turned over his responsibility to SGM High. SGM Mathurin is now the Post SGM and High is still in Iraq. The soldiers have started to rotate back to the states for a 15 day R&R.

Jack Damron, Chairman of the 508th Chapter composed some very nice Letters of Appreciation to the Color Guard and these have been presented. Thanks Jack. Those soldiers were from "C" Btry 1/377 Artillery; this is the Medium Artillery support for the Division (155 MM) a Corp unit. By now you have all read about the helicopter incidents in Iraq, so I won't elaborate on that. I hope and pray that we won't lose any more lives. The new construction continues on Post. All the gates have been modernized. Overhead cover for the guards to include heating elements for cold weather. The guard responsibility will soon be taken over by a civilian-contracting firm. I don't have a lot of knowledge on what they will do, so I will leave it at that. I am too old to take on that job but it does sound interesting and the pay is good for this area.

                        NEW FOUND TROOPERS

Our former Secretary John L “Tiger” Mertz just received some information and passed it on to us on a possible new member. Ron Matuska in Moreno Valley, CA. Ron served in 66-67 in “B/2nd“.

If Moreno Valley, CA sounds familiar to some of you HQ-1954-56 guys it’s because that’s where Billie R Miller was from. And for those of you that didn’t know, Billie passed away in 1976, ten years before our first reunion. We will be sending Ron a copy of the newsletter and hope to see him join and possibly locate some of his friends if we haven’t already found them.

            12-30, 2003

While updating an email address with Ernest Vallery recently he gave me information on another 320 Officer that we hadn’t located yet. He said David G Freeman was the XO of “A” Btry in Ft Benning and was a West Point Graduate.

With that info I went to the computer, sent an email to West Point Office of Graduates and received David’s Florida address today. I went into the computer and searched his name in FL and got his phone number. I called and visited with David and he gave me the name of Claude W. Cooper, “B” Btry 1953-54. I ran his name and only found 4 of them. The one in Wilmington, NC was the right guy so now we have a few more friends back together. Do you have information that will help find more of our lost troopers??

2003 Lifetime Members

These Troopers have paid Lifetime dues in 2003 since the June, July, August newsletter was printed. If corrections need to be made let us know. Robert Weers paid Lifetime dues in 2002 and was left off the last Life Membership list. I’m sorry about that Bob and now stand corrected.

New lifetime members since July 2003 are: Phillip Sabol “C” 1954-56, Jerry Briggs “HQ-HQ” 1962-65, Willard Cagle “HQ-3” 508 1955-56, Shannon Cash “HQ-HQ” 1962-65, Earl Strickling “A” 1954-55 Andy Novak “HQ” 1955-56, Dennis Bubnar “HQ-HQ”1962-65, Earl Gilman “B” 1951-54.

            2004 Membership dues

If in doubt as to your dues status look at the top left corner of your address label on this newsletter. The handwritten date that appears is when your current dues expire or expired. If no date appears you may be new and are receiving a complimentary copy and have not yet joined or we may have made a mistake. Please correct us if that is the case. “L” indicates Lifetime Membership.

As mentioned before, WWII Vet’s, Widows and/or Family members of our deceased Troopers receive the letter free. We also have a few friends that have fallen on hard times and get a free copy. Some of these have been requested by the trooper himself and others by a close friend. Please be sure to let me know if this is the case with you. We have some members more than willing to help out.

If you would like to donate to help send someone the newsletter please send with a note to your treasurer. Remember, Widows/family members, WWII Vets and the few that need help are all indicated by an “X” in top left corner of address label.

I think we should borrow an idea from the 508th chapter and publish the names of all you guys that support us by donating over and above the normal dues. I will try to start this with the next newsletter. I would like to thank all of you that have donated so much over the years.

            Joe Montoya, Chairman 1991-2003

I do think we should all make a special effort to thank Joe for his many years as Chairman. I also think we should encourage Joe, as our new Liaison Officer to continue to write a column for the newsletter. By doing this he can keep us posted on the activities of the  active duty troops at Ft. Campbell as he has in the past.

             Lois Lavendar

I have tried to call Paul several times recently to check on Lois. I just now got through and had a short visit with this to report. Lois came through her cancer surgery in good shape. They went to NC to visit their children for the Holidays. While in NC Lois became ill again and Paul took her to the hospital. They found her blood count not good and she was dehydrated so they hospitalized her. While in the hospital and being monitored they found an irregular heartbeat and Lois now has a pacemaker. They are now back home. If you would like to send a card their address is:

             Ann Cain

As a follow up on some other happenings I called Vincent Cain to check on his wife Ann who had a stroke just days before the reunion. I visited Ann on the phone a few days ago and her speech isn’t noticeably affected. She does walk with the help of a leg brace and Vincent by her side. She also lost her vision to her left side. Ann and Vince are looking forward to the next reunion.

You may send a card to: Vincent and Ann Cain, #8 Edgewood Road, Mt Vernon, IL 62864

            Veterans Day 2004 Information

Howard Eiffert of “C” Btry 1955-56 sent me a packet of material on the Memorial Day Weekend in Columbia, MO. It is sponsored by the Salute to Veterans Corporation. It will be their 16th such celebration. I would recommend you contact the Salute to Veterans Corporation for more information. They are a not for profit organization.  I only have room for the hi-lights in newsletter but their Website is great.

Saturday and Sunday FREE Air shows with 50 WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm and current Aircraft on display and flying. A free 145 unit parade with the air-show war birds flying cover the entire route.

A $35.00 per person Honored Guests and Volunteers Banquet Saturday night at the University of Missouri Hearnes Arena with seating for 600 people. This would be a roast beef dinner with 3 bottles of wine per table of eight. They introduce Reunion Groups and volunteers and then present a complete “Salute To Veterans” Show.

I have only touched on the main events and by no means have given a complete itinerary. I do however encourage each of you to consider attending this great celebration.

            Proposed TEXAS Reunion

We received the following letter from Doc at the Clarksville, TN reunion.

How about the Fort Worth-Dallas area for the 2004 reunion????

They say everything is bigger and better in Texas. Listed are a few things that could make that statement ring true to the troopers.

Downtown Fort Worth offers hundreds of hotel rooms within walking distance. Dozens of unique shops and restaurants in the Sundance Dance Square area.

The cowtown (stockyard area) with it’s old west shopping gallery, live rodeo, western museum, the Omni Theatre, live cattle drive daily, historical homes, Miller Brewery (tour and free beer), Carswell Air base.

Major league baseball (Texas Rangers) depending on the date.

There is also Six Flags over Texas, Fort Worth Zoo (one of the best in the United States).

Greyline live tours of the area. Old steam drive train complete with staged train robbery.

Hocky (Dallas Stars), and Basketball (Dallas Mavericks) depending on the date.

Dallas Dealey Plaza John F Kennedy assassination site (museum and tour).

Sky Dive Texas for those who would dare. 50% discount on static line jump for 320th group.

Texas Motor Speedway (NASCAR Races) again depending on date.

Lonestar Park offers Thoroughbred and Quarter horse racing.

The area also has numerous golf courses.

Billy Bob’s worlds largest honky tonk has inside gift and souvenir shops, live rodeo, two dance floors with music, six (6) bars, always on the weekend there is a big name country artist performing (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard. George Jones, and the like), they will give us discount prices.

The fore mentioned are just a few of the things I know would add to the success of the reunion. And last but not least my friend Governor Rick Perry would issue a State Proclamation honoring our unit. How about that? Enclosed are a few items pertaining to the area.

            Yours All The Way,

            Claude (Doc) Brown

P.S. I would personally provide a few unique Texas door prizes and will make up a unique identification badge.

(Editors Note) I would like to thank “Doc” for his excellent proposal and information. Leone and I work several years ahead on our Mini Reunions. We have three reunions already in the works for 2004 with the Holiday Inn Corning-Painted Post, New York already contracted for at this time. The date is May 11-12-13-14-2004. We have hosted two very successful Texas reunions in the past, thanks to great Texas Hospitality. If the interest is high enough we could possibly consider another in the future or of course someone else may want to host their own Texas Reunion. It is very rewarding work.

TAPS Continued:

Cora Lane: We just received the sad news that our good friend Cora Lane (widow of Billy Lane our Hq Btry 1954-56 cook) passed away October 19, 2003. Cora had been in poor health for some time but was still planning on attending the September reunion with her daughter Billie. Cora had to cancel out at the last minute as her health became too poor to allow here to attend. She was on oxygen almost full time. If you would like to send a card to Cora’s family, send to Cora Lane family in care of: Amanda Bradford

426 Bohannon Rd SE

Cleveland, TN 37323

Amanda and her four-year-old son, Cora’s great grandson were living with and helping take care of Cora. Amanda’s mom, Billie Stinson lived just down the road and also helped with caring for Cora.

Lucille P Kuehlke: Lucille’s last newsletter was returned with notation from Post Office, “Deceased” A check with SSDI records show she passed away June 15, 2003. Her husband Maj. Christian G Kuehkle was the 320th AFA Assistant XO in Ft Benning in1952. He passed away December 15, 1999. No family contact has been made at this time.

William E Stevens, C Btry, McPherson, KS 1994. (Confirmed by Daughter Rene`.) Editors Note: William died of brain cancer and his family has been trying to get help due to Service Connected Disability. William’s jump manifest show’s he jumped in the “A Bomb Test” in Nevada in 1952 several weeks after “Operation Longhorn in Texas.” The government denies the claim because the family has neither official travel orders to the Test Site in NV nor any orders to show he was actually at the test site. Does anyone know about this test, have any such orders or even think they know someone else who was involved?

«     How about it you “C” Btry 1951-53 Troopers. Please help the Stevens family find more information on this operation?

Eugene L Proulx; Svc Btry, Bristol, CT 2002; (confirmed by daughter Michele.)

Allen “Delano” Wheatley, C Btry, DeWitt, AR died in 1959 (confirmed by sister Mrs. Raymond Kraft.)

In my search for our Airborne friends I sometimes run into a situation where all leads are exhausted. I then resort to the Social Security Death Index or “SSDI.” The following Troopers are listed as deceased at city, state  and the date indicated . This is the best information we have and not guaranteed. There is always the possibility of duplication of information with someone with same name, age and hometown or state. All served in the320th in Ft Benning, GA from 51-54.

J                       GOOD NEWS:

We just received a call from our new Chairman “Hank” Groat. The good news is that Robert “Bob” Henning after all his Chemo treatments has be given a clean bill of health with no trace of cancer. I think this is a bright ray of hope in this time of gloom with the war news. Congratulations Bob and Ruby for fighting an uphill battle. Not only were they battling cancer, they were taking care of their paraplegic son that broke his leg.

            Corning, NY Reunion Update

We need to print a change in the email address for the Holiday Inn in Corning for the reunion. If you need to contact the Holiday Inn   by email use crnny@stny.rr.com

A few more sites to visit around Corning are the Glenn Curtiss Museum and Historic Market Street in Hammondsport, NY. The National Warplane Museum in Horseheads, NY. The Soaring Museum in Elmira, NY where it may be possible for some of our adventuresome troopers to get a ride, weather co-operating. I’m sorry I don’t have a cost for the ride. Be sure to wear your name tag as some of these will give group discounts.( Be sure to ask what the longest sailplane ride record is. You will be surprised.)

The sit down banquet meal will be your choice of Beef or Turkey as listed in the information sheet. Accompaniments are cream of broccoli soup, tossed green salad, glazed carrots, mashed potatoes with sour cream and chives, strawberry short cake, and beverages.

I recently received input from several WWII and Viet Nam era troopers that will have to be in the next newsletter. Thank You, Rodge READ AND THINK

“The composer of this poem is not known, but should get the Pulitzer prize for Poetry for 2003”. I may offend a few with this but it was sent to me by someone that was there and left a lot of his Foxhole Buddies behind under those white crosses. The above quote is his.

Rodge

Eleven thousand soldiers
lay beneath the dirt and stone,
all buried on a distant land,
so far away from home.

For just a strip of dismal beach
they paid a hero's price,
to save a foreign nation
they all made the sacrifice.

And now the shores of Normandy
are lined with blocks of white,
Americans who didn't turn
from someone else's plight.

Eleven thousand reasons
for the French to take our side,
but in the moment of our need,
they chose to run and hide.

Chirac said every war means loss,
perhaps for France that's true,
for they've lost every battle
since the days of Waterloo.

Without a soldier worth a damn
to be found in the region,
the French became the only land
to need a Foreign Legion.

You French all say we're arrogant.
Well hell, we've earned the right--
We saved your sorry nation
when you lacked the guts to fight.

But now you've made a big mistake,
and one that you'll regret;
you took sides with our enemies,
and that we won't forget.

It wasn't just our citizens
you spit on when you turned,
but every one of ours who fell
the day the towers burned.

You spit upon our soldiers,
on our pilots and Marines,
and now you'll get a little sense
of just what payback means.

So keep your Paris fashions
and your wine and your champagnes,
and find some other market
that will buy your aeroplanes.

And try to find somebody else
to wear your French cologne,
for you're about to find out
what it means to stand alone.

You see, you need us far more
than we ever needed you,
America has better friends
who know how to be true.

I'd rather stand with warriors
who have the will and might,
than huddle in the dark with those
whose only flag is white.

I'll take the Brits, the Aussies,
the Israelis and the rest,
for when it comes to valor
we have seen that they're the best.

We'll count on one another
as we face a moment dire,
while you sit on the sideline
with a sign "friendship for hire."

We'll win this war without you
and we'll total up the cost,
and take it from your foreign aid,
and then you'll feel the loss.

And when your nation starts to fall,
well, Frenchie, you can spare us,
just call the Germans for a hand,
they know the way to Paris.
