320th Field Artillery Association
Hazel
Message from our Chairman
David B. Smith, HHB/A/2-320th AFA, ‘64-‘66
Greetings from rainy
A special plea for our veterans of the 2-320th when the battalion was
part of the 1st Brigade (Sep), 101st Airborne Division in
The Brigade is having its reunion this year in
For information on the reunion, and registration forms, go to the
Brigade’s website, at www.http://firstscreamingeagles.org/, and click on the
reunion information.
As this Spring wears on, I’ll be working with your Officers to revise
our Tennessee State Charter, and our bylaws. Both are out of date, and we’ll
work up revisions that can be approved by the membership when we meet in 2009.
I have also drafted a new mission statement for our Association that our
Webmaster can use on our website. The statement reflects that there are now 4
battalions of the 320th Field Artillery Regiment, and that all 4 are Air
Assault rather than Airborne. Here’s what the Mission Statement says:
The aims
and purposes of the 320th Airborne Field Artillery Association are to develop
the common bond existing between those who served in the battalions and
batteries of the 320th Airborne Field Artillery and the 320th Field Artillery
(Air Assault) Regiment, to perpetuate the memory of those who have died, to
maintain contact with those who are ill or disabled, and to be of assistance to
the families of those who have died, or who are ill or disabled.
I have not yet had any feedback from my last newsletter on where
everyone would like our next reunion to be in 2009. If nobody comes up with any
better ideas, we will assume that the Clarksville/Ft. Campbell area is still
OK, and work toward that goal.
If anyone wishes to communicate with me, I recommend contacting me by
e-mail (attyd_smith@hotmail.com). I
access that e-mail both at my office and at home.
Airborne, Willing and Able!
Dave

1950’s News and Information
I will be spending more of this 2008 New Year working with the 1950's 320th again. These 50's troopers were slighted this past year as we were finding and updating the 60's roster with almost 500 new 60's and 70's guys. I have started the New Year by beginning to update the 1950's Officers Roster. This Roster was started as only an Email address roster but we have been adding more info including mailing addresses, telephone numbers, Retired Rank,Wives names Etc.
The
first call I made was to Courtney Klingelhoefer Widow
of John. We have Courtney's updated information in the roster and have
updated a few others. I had a very pleasant talk with Courtney this morning.
When I was still trucking I used to call John and he would meet me at the
Hardies Restaurant in
I
received the Name of Lt William C Overman from
the early 50's at the reunion or someone gave me information on him about
I
received a change of address on our 55/56 320th BN Commanders wife Helen Fausset today and made a call to see how she was doing.
Helen fell down the stairs at her home in
Helen
said the Ambulance crew all came back into the Emergency room to check on her
to see how she was doing and to tell her how sorry they were about dropping
her. After two falls, "Both, Without a Parachute" in a half hour and
a fast ride to the Hospital she was as chipper today as ever. Yes, she has
moved but only about a mile and a half to a retirement and assisted care
facility. She says it is a fantastic place. She has her own apartment and
kitchen, but is also able to have meals on site if she wants them. I'm sure
those of you that knew Helen in the 50's know that she has Macular Degeneration
and has been Legally Blind for quite a few years now. I try to call her several
times a year and she is a delight to visit with. Helens son Neal is in
Helen says to tell everyone hello for her and if you want to call (I can assure she would love to get a call as it is nearly impossible for her to read.) I have included her address information for you as well as her son Neal.

I knew that Jim was
the Motor Pool Dispatcher in
Jim also asked about the
Smith brothers from IL, Guy Watters from
Now I'm a little hard of hearing, never took shorthand, can't read my own writing most of the time and am losing a lot of short term memory so Jim, if I didn't get all this information straight I want you and everyone else to know I did the best I could with what I have to work with.
Guy Watters HQ/Svc Btry 54/56 Jim asking about Guy Watters led me to my
next phone call. I called Guy and he said that I was just the guy he needed to
talk to. He started drawing his SS several years ago and can't collect on his
time spent in the Army. He has no records to show this and the Army tells him
that his records burned up in the St Louis Fire. I'm sure a lot of you guys can
send a letter of Verification that you remember him as being in the Service
with him. The next question I ask was did he Fly to
Jim Kilburn Svc Btry 54/56 Guy also asked if I had an address
on Jim Kilburn. I had an address in Belle Vista, AR but it was no longer
current and the phone number was disconnected. I called Jim's brother Dean
who was in HQ Btry with me and he told me Jim passed away
Jim Mills, Svc Btry 53/55. I sent this to Jim Mills this afternoon. Guy Watters can't draw his SS Retirement on his time in the Army as they have no records for him. He wanted to talk to you and Jim Kilburn but Jim passed away about a year ago. Have you been into the Website and got the Newsletter and updates okay?? rodg
I talked to Clem several days ago and he is doing fine.
Much, much better than expected. Clem had Colon Surgery two weeks ago at the VA
Hospital in
Clem said the last time he was in the VA Hospital he was in with a bunch of old guys. This time Clem said he was the old guy and roommates were in their 50' and 60's. One guy had a Brother that was in "C" 321 after he was in the 101st. He could well be one of our 320th guys. Clem didn't have a name though.
If you want to contact Clem as I did his info is: Clem

Update on Eddie Shamp A/C 320 51/53. When I sent this update to “C” Btry 55/56 Eddie Shamp’s email bounced. I couldn’t understand this as we talked and I received a change of address and new email in Aug or Sept 07. I called today and only talked for a couple of minutes as Eddie had to leave for a Dialysis Treatment. Eddie had a Heart attack 27 Nov 07 and moved in with his daughter until he is able to go back to the farm. His home phone has been canceled and this is his daughter’s phone 409-466-7630 while he lives with her.
Eddie’s USPS mailing address has not changed as they still pick it up at the farm. Send Eddie a “Get Well Card”.
These guys email addresses all from HHB 60’s and 70’s bounced also. Earl D Masters, George “Bill” Welch, Richard Pristas, Bill McCreedy, I Amis, Robert Horton. If you are in contact with any of these guys please get a new address for me and let me know what it is. Rodg

I found a phone number for Larry McBurnett's Brother Jerry some time ago. Their was no address connected to the Phone number and he would only give me his email address. He was going to send me more information but has not done so. Neither his Email address or phone number are any good now so have lost contact. rodg

Rick needs to prove his Purple Heart to the VA to be covered by service connected issues and the Purple Heart gives him additional benefits. Rick is going to try and have a second look at his records and see if his final DD 214 was over looked and see if his Purple Heart orders are in his records. Another way is to locate some one that received a Purple Heart and were on the same orders as Rick. If any of you received a Purple Heart in late 1967 and still have the paper orders with Ricky Oyas name on them please get in touch. The orders will have a number on them that can be traced and verified.

located and talked to Dennis Magovern in
Dennis had just returned from R&R and had not made it back to the hill that “A” battery was on the infamous night of 15 Oct 1967 when they were over ran by a large force of NVA. He was at base camp on radio watch and could not believe what he was hearing coming over the radio.
He never did make it back up on the hill as all of “A” battery was replaced with fresh replacements.
I called off some names of vets that were on the hill, I called Ricky Oyas name and Dennis said I wonder if Rick is still pissed off at me for eating his donut that was left on the FDC table for him.
Dennis then said I really owe him (Rick). Dennis told the story about a young private that had done something stupid. LT. Magovern as his commander was disciplining him verbally when the private unslung his loaded M-16 and pointed it at the LT. Magovern’s gut. A tense moment passed until Rick Oyas walked in observed the situation and stepped between the private and LT. Magovern. Rick said to the private you don’t want to do this, give me the weapon. Rick took the M-16 and the private was taken to a rear hospital for psychiatric evaluations.

I’ll keep looking. Thanks for the work you are doing.

This note from Dave Flood,
I remember SSG Cogley very well. He came in after Sad Hill. I remember speaking with him about our battle at Sad Hill. He told me that in his previous tour he was in 5 major battles. One of the stories I heard about him in his previous tour was that while under heavy fire the unit lost internal communication. SSG Cogley grabbed a reel of wire and ran from gun to gun under fire running a hot loop with all the sections. Dave Flood

Here are a few more guys from
the 2/320th that may help with an update. I had a pleasant
chat with Doris (Holder) several days ago. Thanks for hooking us
up. Here goes:

As you can see, most of these guys were killed in the same battle for “B”
Battery on 6/7/66. I happened to be on a hill above the fight and dealt
with some of the radio traffic. It was quite a scrap which, of course, our guys
won.
I’m sure I’ll turn up more information as time goes on. Regards, RS Horton
17 Jan 2008 Richard Fennoseff
“C” Btry 55/56 and HHB/2/320/ 1964/65 I called Richards wife Barbara in Clarksville
today as I found out recently that we also had a Richard Fenoseff
in the 60’s group. I wanted to be sure that he was one and the same and she
confirmed that he was. Richard was one of our younger troopers with us in
I would like for someone from the 60’s that knew Richard to contact me and fill me in a little more. It wasn’t clear to me if Richard went to V/Nam for sure or not. Barbara has a daughter nearby that has a computer and will get into the website with her Mother and will also have email contact.
I’m not positive I got all this straight but best I can get is Richard had to leave the Army with a Medical Discharge. I’m almost sure he had 20 years in. He had Diabetes and Heart problems and eventually lost a leg to the Diabetes.
Barbara and her daughter had been to Nashville Shopping. When they got home Richard had passed away sitting in his Recliner with an Ice cream cone in his hand and it hadn’t melted yet. The Doctor said he must have passed away just as they were walking in the house of Congestive Heart Failure. Barbara said that was his favorite Chair and he loved his ice cream cone.
When we sent this message out yesterday we weren’t even sure what units Richard was in, if in fact he was in V/Nam. Now we know as our Association Chairman can and did testify that Richard served under him twice. Thanks David. We get more info all the time.

70’S INFORMATION and NEWS
We welcome another new group of 320th Field Artillery Personnel.
We recently received a roster of almost 100 Officers that served in Ft Bragg, NC in the 70s with the 320/82 and have been receiving information individually from many of them. These Officers have tentative plans to get together at the All America Week 2009. When we receive a roster like this we are hesitant to publish these names and addresses as some may request that their information be kept private. We are waiting on many of you for that permission.
We have Email address books for each and every 320th unit. We will share this information with you when you give us your information and your permission to add you to the Address Book. Most of you have received this request previously and we thank those of you that have already replied. We will send a hardcopy of this Newsletter to those without email.
If you served with the 320/82 at any time period we would like to hear from you and add you to this group. (Some of you years ago were put in with the WWII Glider FA by mistake as your info was 320/82 and no years of service.) We may well have your name and address not your unit and years of service so please update us. Mike Fleury, Jack Conlin, Harry Florence, Peter Forte, Pete Magrie and Kenny Workman may well all fall in this group as we don’t have their complete information. We also have a Senior NCO Roster from this time period with many of them found. If you want to know if we have already located your friend all you need do is email me at rodleone@centurytel.net or call me at 608-854-2317 with your request.
We do not require paid Membership for this service at this time but we may have to change this. We do appreciate all of you that have joined and sent in your dues.

These “E” Btry Berlin Red Legs have signed in on our Website recently. The Battery Commander from 1988/1990 Ray Trevino, Vick Alvarez, Brian Martin, Jeff Tucker, Chris Mazaros, Scott Baxley, David Wetter, and Randy Pino. I received a request from Jason Howell to find friends Jeffrey Tucker and William Whalen. I succeeded in finding Jeff Tucker this past weekend and Jeff and Jason have already visited. Jeff is still on active duty as I’m sure more of the guys will be.
I have been in contact with Vic Alvarez and he is in contact with 76 guys from this time period. Some of them I’m sure are listed above. Vic was going to try to get a message ready for the Newsletter.
GOD ~ COUNTRY ~ HONOR
I just wanted to get the day over with and...go down to Smokey's for a few cold
ones.
Sneaking a look at my watch, I saw the time, 1655.
Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are closed for the day.
Full dress was hot in the August sun.
I saw the car pull into the drive, '69 or '70 model Cadillac Deville, looked
factory-new.
It pulled into the parking lot at a snail's pace.
An old woman got out so slow I thought she was paralyzed.
She had a cane and a sheaf of flowers, about four or five bunches as best I
could tell.
I couldn't help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a slightly bitter
taste:
She's going to spend an hour, and for this old soldier...my hip hurts like hell
and I'm ready to get out of here right now!'
But for this day my duty was to assist anyone coming in.
Kevin would lock the 'In' gate and
if... I could just hurry the old biddy along, we might make the last half of
happy hour at Smokey's.
I broke Post Attention.
My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step and the pain went up a
notch.
I must have made a real military sight; middle-aged man with a small pot-gut
and half a limp, in Marine Full Dress Uniform, which had lost its razor crease
about 30 minutes after I began the watch... at the cemetery.
I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk.
She looked up at me with an old woman's squint.
'Ma'am may I assist you in any way?'
She took long enough to answer.
'Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers?
I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.'
'My pleasure Ma'am.' Well, it wasn't too much of a lie.
She looked again. 'Marine, Where were you stationed?'
'
She looked at me closer.
'Wounded in action, I see. Well done, Marine, I'll be as quick as I can.'
I lied a little bigger, 'No hurry, Ma'am.'
She smiled............. and winked at me.
'Son, I'm 85-years old and I can tell
a lie from a long way off.
Let's get this done, might be the
last time I can do this.
My name's Joanne Wieserman, and I've a few Marines
I'd like to see one more time.'
'Yes, Ma'am, At your service.'
She headed for the World War I section, stopping at a stone.
She picked one of the bunches out of my arm and laid it on top of the stone.
She murmured something I couldn't quite make out.
The name on the marble was; Donald S.Davidson, USMC, France 1918.
She turned away and made a straight line for the World War II section, stopping
at one stone.
I saw a tear slowly tracking its way down her cheek.
She put a bunch on a stone; the name was; Stephen X.Davidson,
USMC, 1943.
She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone; Stanley J.Wieserman USMC , 1944.
She paused for a second, 'Two more, son, and we'll be done'
I almost didn't say anything, but, 'Yes, Ma'am, Take your time.'
She looked confused. 'Where's the
I pointed with my chin. 'That way,
Ma'am.'
'Oh!' she chuckled quietly, me and old age ain't too
friendly.'
She headed down the walk I'd pointed at and stopped at a couple of stones
before she found the ones she wanted.
She placed a bunch on Larry Wieserman USMC, 1968, and the last one on Darrel Wieserman USMC, 1970.
She stood there and murmured a few words...I still couldn't make out.
'OK, son, I'm finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home.'
'Yes, Ma'am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?'
She paused. 'Yes, Donald Davidson was my father;
Stephen was my uncle;
She stopped, whether she had finished, or couldn't finish, I just don't know.
She made her way to her car, slowly, and painfully.
I waited for a polite distance to
come between us...and then double-timed it over to Kevin waiting by the car.
'Get to the 'Out'-gate QUICK~! I have something I've JUST got to do.'
Kevin started to say something, but saw the look I gave him.
He broke the rules to get us there down the service road. “We beat her”.
She hadn't made it around the rotunda yet.
'Kevin... stand to attention next to the gate post and follow my lead.'
I humped it across the drive to the other post.
When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges and began the short
straight traverse to the gate, I called in my best gunny's voice: 'Tehn Hut! Present Haaaarms!'
I have to hand it to Kevin; he never blinked an eye; full dress attention and a
salute that would make his DI proud.
She drove through that gate with two old worn-out soldiers giving her a send
off she deserved, for service rendered to her country, and for knowing Duty,
Honor and Sacrifice
I am not quite sure, but I think I saw...a BIG salute returned from that
Cadillac!
Instead of 'The End'.... just think of 'Taps'.
As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer:
'Lord, keep our servicemen and women safe, whether they serve at home or
overseas.
Hold them in your loving hands and protect them as they protect us.'
Let's all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before, in our
thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy. 'In God We
Trust!'
Sorry about your monitor, it made mine blurry too!
I'm sure you might want to pass this one along to a few friends.

As you all know, I’ve
not been making any progress when it comes to getting the ASSOCIATION
NEWSLETTER out in a timely way. I have too many irons in the fire so some of
them have to go and I have started. Those of you that have been with us a few
years know that I have been active with both the 320th FA
Association and the 508ARCT Chapter.
I started this past week sending all
the 508 ARCT Chapter information to Chapter Chairman Ken Hamill. I will at some
point pack up all the File Cards, Orders, Jump School Rosters and remaining
information and send to him also. I will maintain my 508 email addresses as
long as they keep me updated with good addresses. I will answer as many
questions as I can for them. I will no longer search for the 508 Troopers and
will devote all my time to the 320th.
This does not mean our 320th
friends are off the hook by any means. I will start asking you personally to
help write articles for the Newsletter. I can’t write about
We need to seriously get many more of
you involved with us so we have some back-ups in place. Case in point, our
Webmaster Tom Walinski was in the VA Hospital for a period of time and no way
to keep the Website updated. I had some problems with my lack of computer
skills. The Newsletter was all ready except for the last two paragraphs almost
two months ago. I failed to do something correctly and in a flash it was gone.
We have had problems in the past as any Association does with staying in
contact and miscommunications. Our Memorial Book of Deceased Troopers started
and maintained by Sarah Ellis is going to need help. Sarah’s health has been
bad for some time and I personally think that we are doing her a great
disservice to expect her to continue with it. I think we have enough hands out
here to take up some of these duties and make it easier for everyone concerned.
Please consider helping.
Thank you,
Rodger
