Webmaster Notes

It has now been well over a year since our 320th Website went live.  I have changed it to be compatible with five Web Browsers.  I’ve added pictures and stories from you as you have contributed these.  I’ve tried to keep you abreast of news events, sports and weather.

Now it is time for you to give me feedback.  What can I do to make OUR website better for YOU?  I am open to do whatever I am able to improve the site for better communication between members, better and more up to date record keeping, more channels of helpful information, better links for claims help; just whatever YOU think is needed and I am capable of providing on the site.

Please let me know if the website is helpful to you.  How often do you visit it?  Is it worth having?  And, here is a big one for you to think about; is there any one of you who would volunteer to be my backup just in case I happen to drop dead?  There is no one in place now and the 320th deserves better than that, don’t you think?  I do. It only takes someone knowledgeable in writing simple websites to do it, not a genius.  Please think about helping.

My contact is webmaster@320thfieldartilleryassociation.org.  Oh, a reminder.  If you want a 320th e-mail address just let me know.  I have 2400 left to assign.  As long as your dues are paid you can have your very own.  As they used to say in the commercials; “Be the first kid in your neighborhood to get one”.

News of the 50’s

(This message from Cliff Hodge HQ Btry 55/56 and his first meeting with Frank Febus since 1956.)

28 July 2008

Rodger

I was sorry to hear about Andy Varanelli’s death and my being negligent in not informing you in a timely manner

What happened is that I was in upstate N.Y. in May and made a point of driving down to NJ.to meet with Frank Febus who I had not seen since 1956...  Frank and I had a nice 3 hour visit at the closed NJ Vietnam Veterans memorial where Frank is involved as a volunteer.

He told me of Andy's death and I just overlooked telling you Frank, as you no doubt are aware is an officer in the NJ chapter of the 101 association... He had been my main buddy back at HQ Battery. We exchanged stories of our lives since the army and looked at the many pictures Frank had of those days. You were in some of them. I had promised to go to him the first time I was on the east coast which was last May.  It was really good to see him and hear about his life since we parted. It was a very nice visit.

The Memorial NJ has put up is a very fine and moving place and although I did not get a chance to go inside, the grounds were first class and suitable for proper remembrance. It would be well worth a visit for anyone and I plan to do so at another time, Lord willing..

I hope this e-mail finds you and yours in good health.

 Cliff Hodge, HQ. Battery 1955-56

(Email message from Frank Febus, HQ Btry 55/56 concerning his first meeting with Cliff Hodge since 1956.)

Rodger/Cliff,

Sorry I missed your call; I was away and arrived just now. My meeting with Cliff was very emotional for me and rewarding at the same time. Three hours together was not enough time to say the things I would have liked to say. I thought about them as he drove away.  With Andy passing away the day before, our meeting had a very special meaning for me. Andy and I had been officers of our chapter for 15 continuous years and with our currently deceased secretary, our  chapter flourished with activities and membership growth.

Please for give my not advising you of Andy's passing, it was my self-denial, not really wanting to accept the fact of not being able to continue the chapter business without Andy. All the past chapter officers of the last 15 years have answered their last roll call,

I'm the last one standing. And at my age (71), I have the same problems we all share in these golden years of our lives. Our WWII chapter members have been reduced to 2 active members, those that have not bought the farm yet, no longer can make meetings or participate in our activities. But their legacy continues with us, most of our WWII vets were at Normandy, Holland and Bastogne, so our chapter, 55 years old, has a very strong "Screaming Eagle" tradition.

Andy, although not having served with the 101st. was very proud of his association with the chapter and we of him. Our current officers are all VN veterans. The 101st. was deployed to VN in July '65 and served there until '72 or '73, not sure on that. We now have 4 Iraq/Afghanistan veterans who were activated and deployed and were all 62 and older, MOS being critical. All are back home now and well.

 Frank

Rodger,
Got your e-mail with attachments.  Thanks for all the work you've done!  It is great to know that someone has the commitment and energy to bring old memories to those of us that have lost touch.  I will pull together some of the material that I have and get it to you.  I would appreciate any updates, and I thank you again.

15 September 2008 (Email I sent to 427 AAA)

I received a call from Bill Treat that he has not received the Newsletter for quite some time. He had been talking to Robert Weers and Robert and his wife are moving back to Alaska. They also talked about one of the old 427 AAA Sgt's that I had located and written about in the last Association Newsletter.

Bill has a new Email address and that may be why he didn't get the Newsletter. Also a few people still don't understand that for those with email the Newsletter is published on the Association Website now. We have done this for well over a year now. Website address is www.320thfieldartilleryassociation.org

Bill asked me if I had ever located M/Sgt Asa Ellett. I had reports that he was killed in a Car Accident in AZ many years ago but no contact with his family to verify this. I worked on it yesterday again and found a Cousin that verified that this information is true but he had no idea what the date was. He also said that Asa had gone on to become a Helicopter Pilot and that he must have had an accident in the Army. He apparently wound up with steel Plates in his head and was Medically Discharged from the Army. His cousin gave me a Phone number of who he thinks is Asa's Daughter  Jo Ann. I have left a message with her answering machine and will try to call again. I will update you with the corrected info as soon as I get it.

17 Nov 2008 (Note from Bill Shirley 427 AAA)

Thank you Rodger for all the work that you have put into the 427th AAA and the 320th Airborne FA. I will go through the list and see if I can recall some of the guys. Using my memory isn't my strong point these days. I am amazed that I can remember as much as I do. I have a total of almost Eight years in the 11th, the 508th (427AAA) and the 101st Airborne when we returned to Fort Campbell from Japan. Thanks again. Bill Shirley (SP-3) (SGT)

November, 09

I sent a message to the 50’s HQ Btry guys asking what a Field Communication Wireman’s MOS was as I could not remember what mine was among a lot of other things. I found out I’m not alone in my memory loss.

(Jack Hartman’s reply,)

Oh boy Rodger you are starting to show your age.  Hell I can't even remember the number to count when exiting the plane.  It was somewhere in the thousands. Lucky my chute opened before I counted that high.

(Bob Baxla reply,)

Rodger:  I searched my personal records.  I cannot be sure, but as a wireman in '55, my records listed 310.07.  Hope it helps.

(Dan Abernathy reply,)

Rodger, When you find out what your MOS # is please let me know because that was my job with HQ Btry 320 AFAB.

(Phil Davis reply,)

Sorry Rodger but I can't remember either.  Guess that is what happens when you get to be a senior citizen.
Hope someone can help you out.

(Jack Bock reply,)

Dear Rodger: How about 310.07.  It’s what mine was changed from, to 051.17, when I got promo to E-4 (voice radio operator)

Hi Rodger,

I just wanted to thank you for your kind words about my father--they mean a lot to me during this difficult time. It's ironic that, only through his passing, have I realized what a great guy he was. Don't get me wrong--I always knew he was a good person. It's just that I learned so much more about him this past week.

 Thanks, again.

(My note to Judy concerning the MA Ice Storm)

Judy,

How did you guys fair out with the Ice Storm?? We talked to Walt and Joan late last night and they just got power back and house warmed to 51 degrees. We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow by noon tomorrow and it hasn't started yet. We do expect two inches per hour for part of the storm. Right now the freezing rain line is staying south of us so hope it doesn't change. rodg

Hi Rodger,

We didn't get anything the last time. Further up from us got hit hard. We dodged the bullet that time. Some people were without heat, electric and water. Right now it is snowing pretty heavy and we expect to get between 6 to 12 inches today. It started around noon today and will snow until morning. Then we are going to get hit with another one on Sunday. I just hope we don't get any freezing rain. Guess we are getting it all at once. I hope it isn't too bad for the holidays with people driving.

Stay healthy and keep warm.

Have a Merry Christmas.

Judy & Phil

(Note from Al Hotlen HQ Btry 55/56)

Rodger, I’m sorry to hear such sad news, coming in more and more often with the passage of time. SFC Lyke supervised me and some other troopers in the construction of the Battery's glass and wood bulletin board outside Captain Dillon’s office. Did you ever get the 1955 Btry Thanksgiving Menu I sent you along with pictures of Clarence Lyke and another SFC walking right (past my bulletin board) as they left the mess hall (in the rear of the picture?)

You guys have had zero degree weather but our ass is in for it Rodger. We have less than 2 inches of rain this winter in most of California. Can you believe that?  The state is about 950 miles long and if you fly over it, all you can see is dead trees. God help these people when the fire season starts. Rodger, we will need-para-fire fighters.

Albert L. Hotlen Auburn, California.

28 January 2009 (Email update from Hank and Mary Lou Groat’s Daughter Kim).

Hi everyone,
I realized recently that I haven't written in a month or two. This is mainly because there hasn't been much to say - what great news that is - right? And I'm busy, as everyone is, with teens/pets/and my husband's new business.

So, what's going on here in VA, besides snow and cold that I used to associate with PA and IL??? Well, Hank and Mary Lou (Mom & Dad) have decided to buy a small rancher in Fredericksburg, just down the street from our home.
Their new address will be 17 Heritage Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405.

The closing on the home will be February 13th and they expect to be moving in around the second half of March if the work that is going to be done on the house goes as hoped. The home has excellent bones but the decor is stuck in the 70's and that is where the work is going to be. Also, the master bath will be gutted and made handicap ready. Some of the doors will be widened and there will be new paint and flooring all around. I will set up before and after photos and perhaps a blog to make it easier. More on that later....

As Dad's birthday is March 14th, Karen and Jon are planning to visit, celebrate and also help with some packing. If you are able to come for a visit or come and help pack that would be nice. If you want to contact me we can talk about the best times and what is going on at the time you'd like to come. We will have someone professional to do the move as many of us have to be careful of our backs these days!  :)
Love to you all,
  Kim

News of the 60’s and 70’s

(Email message from Shannon Cash about what He, Dennis Bubnar and Bob Runo all HHB/2/320/63/65 do in their spare time. Copy and paste the link below in your Browser visit the Liberty Jump Team Website.)

http://www.libertyjumpteam.org/

Troopers:

This is what Dennis Bubnar, Bob Runo, and I did last weekend, Oct. 3-5, 2008 at Victory Days in Terre Haute, IN. Does this bring back any memories? We each made 4 jumps in 3 days!

 http://video.yahoo.com/watch/3700595/10180510

We three have joined a commemorative WWII parachute demonstration team called the Liberty Jump Team (LJT)...we honor and inform the public about the 101st and 82nd jumps into Normandy and Holland on, and after, D-Day.

We wear reproduction D-Day paratrooper uniforms (including real BROWN Corcoran jump boots!) and all the correct equipment. We jump out of authentic (some were at D-Day) Douglas C-47's and all jumps are static line using modern military round parachutes (not sky-diving squares) and reserves.

Many of us will be going over to Normandy and Holland in June of 2009 to jump there and mark the 65th Anniversary of D-Day. The LJT has jumped there in the past several years and has quite a few members from Europe. Imagine, jumping where it really happened!

If you might be interested in joining the LJT we would love to jump with you! We all went to a 5 day jump school put on by the team cadre (we have qualified jump-masters and riggers) made our qualifying jumps and received our LJT wings and certificates. Our members are from all over the US (and Europe) and are mostly ex-airborne troopers even a few actual D-Day veterans!!

Contact me and I'll get you “hooked up”.

Airborne!! Shannon

15 October 2008 (This message from Dennis Bubnar.)

I've been back east since Sept. 28. I went to San Antonio, TX and got my son, Ty's van from a repair facility there. He and his family had to leave it there when they transferred back to Ft. Bragg, NC. I drove up to Indianapolis, IN to Bob & Jane Runo's place where I went to the Indy motor speedway and museum there.

Bob, Tim Hardin & I hooked up and caravanned to Terre Haute, IN where we hooked up with the “Liberty Jump Team” to include Shannon Cash. The 3 of us old Army pals & Tim, a new friend, had all attended the LJT jump school in Aug. and are qualified parachutists.

In Terre Haute the team represented by about 18 or more jumpers took part in the 'Victory Days' Air show and veterans remembrance celebration Sept 3, 4&5. LJT members to include 2 WWII paratrooper veterans (83 & 86 years old, respectively) all dressed as WWII paratroopers in the D-Day (June 6, 1944) outfits & paraphernalia of the day. We did a total of 6 exhibition jumps from the C47 'Black Sparrow' (she's a restored bird of the day arrayed in the invasion colors and stripes typical to allied aircraft that took part in activities of the Normandy Invasion) and is a member of the CAF from Michigan. We each averaged 4 or less jumps each.

We used modern steer able military chutes that resemble WWII chutes, but work much better than the chutes of the day (which are now rare artifacts). There was an unbelievable collection of restored and flying 'war birds' of many types, re-enactors camps and battle re-enactments between American ground and Axis troops to include restored and operational vehicles, weapons and equipment of the day. Of course we 'paratroopers' think we were the highlight of the event - but we were all excited and pleased that we could force our old bones through the moves and actions of those 3 days (my Mom will laugh at my application of the term 'old'). See attached photo.

I went to the Auburn / Cord / Duisenberg Car Museum in Auburn, IN and the Wright-Patterson AFB Museum in Dayton, OH on my way driving from IN to NC. I desire to have a 'Deusy' sedan and a 'P 51 Mustang' (ain't dreams grand?).  I stopped and visited with 'Wild Bill' McCreedy in Gallipolis, OH (another 320th Army pal) and I am now visiting and wrestling around with the grand kids at Ty's house in NC.
Ty and I will jump from 'Black Sparrow' with LJT at an event here near Ft. Bragg, NC Saturday, Oct. 25. That will fulfill a desire he and I have had to jump together, and of course it makes my cup runneth over just thinking, “I are a paratrooper once again.” Ty's a jumpmaster qualified trooper of the 2/325th Airborne Infantry Regiment who's presently doing his residency as a physician’s assistant also at Bragg. I love my fantasies! Click on or copy and paste to your Browser bar: http://www.libertyjumpteam.org/

They memorialize WWII paratroopers all over the States and in Europe specifically. Sue will fly in to watch us two “jump out of perfectly good airplanes” and then we will fly home about the 27th.

Later,  Dennis

23 October 2008

(Second email from Dennis Bubnar)

Ty took me out to Green Ramp at Pope AFB adjacent to the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC. I couldn't absorb all the acronyms quickly enough so bear with how I label things.

The 2nd Brigade was preparing for a field exercise that would also include the 4th Bdg who is ramping up to deploy to Iraq for the 1st time since being developed and added to the 82nd's assets (formerly consisting of 3 Bdgs). The exercise will include tactical night parachute jumps that will last for a week or more. At “Green Ramp”, men, equipment and required battlefield assets are sorted out, manifested to deployment aircraft, procedures practiced, tested and arranged to keep the flow of nearly 2 airborne brigades “marching as to war”. This will encompass nearly 3,000 (my meager estimates) operational persons (men & women)  who are part and parcel of our U.S. best ground force warriors of divisional size (as a former paratrooper, I am of course, prejudiced in this assessment).

When we were there hundreds of troopers were out back, under roof, practicing PLF's (parachute landing falls), aircraft door exit exercises, jumpmaster procedures and shuffling into complex but precise and marked manifest positions.

Inside the multiple huge, air-conditioned adjacent packing sheds hundreds more moved on into their final preparations for their up-coming jumps. They have been issued their parachutes and have lined up in wooden bench lined areas that replicate the positions they will take in their respective aircraft. They team up in pairs (“jump buddies“) to don their parachutes and clamp, tie, snap and strap on pounds of personal and squad related gear, packs and related war material.

When they have gotten rigged up on their own the jumpmasters move in on them with the precision of surgeons and implement their JMPI, a detailed inspection of the trooper and his gear. The JM can call in expert riggers that are standing by to correct, repair or replace any discrepant equipment the JM may not be able to correct on his own.

There are “black hats” moving about this “dance” who trained the JM's, ever watchful for any inequities that could require their assistance or correction. There is a strong, "measure twice - cut once" approach to insuring that ALL is right, correct and precise. A near SNAFU, caught and corrected also has a heavy responsibility attached wherein a person could loose his job on-the-spot if deemed appropriate. Mass parachuting under such constraints has no room for error right on down to how he hits the ground under full load.

While this massive 'dance' is being 'choreographed', the Air Force is out on the tarmac of Pope Field adjacent to the buzzing 'Green Ramp' area readying huge C-17 jet transports and the venerable (but dwarfed) C-130 Hercules craft parked side by side with each other, their stern ramps down exposing their maw-like interiors face to the sheds. Some are loaded with heavy equipment, rigged w/ multiple huge 'equipment chutes' such as artillery support that will be required on the ground, some don only troopers chuted up and ready with their own gear and some of these 'big-momma' C-17's as I was permitted to inspect had on its deck a 23,000 lb. howitzer & tow vehicle on one pallet and the rest of its available space was filled with approximately 60 rigged and ready paratroopers - IN THE SAME PLANE!
As the AF loadmaster led my JM qualified son, M/Sgt Ty and old decrepit ex-private ME, as we ascended the ramp into the belly of this behemoth C-17 - Ty turned about in my face and gave me the JM's practiced signal to 'Stand In The Door', which I dutifully did: Oh to be at 1,200 feet elevation at THAT moment and properly chuted - the stuff dreams are made of.

Those of you who are getting this blab of mine that are or were paratroopers will remember the excitement of such events, believe me, you can hear the sounds, smell the smells - the buzz of it all is IN you. I had to back out the door, and all painfully afoot I continued the tour right on up to the flight deck; what a teeming load of modern high-tech trooper delivery system these great new birds are!

How sweet it is to have had the opportunity to 'ramp-up' to see the modern day elements utilized in this very up-to-date STRAK Airborne Troop Delivery System. I ate up every minute of it all with a spoon and I'm truly sorry for those of you who have never –

For those of you who haven't heard, Ty & I are humble members of the Liberty Jump Team, having re-qualified to jump status. This organization that you can view at libertyjumpteam.org is dedicated to honoring past and present paratrooper veterans of the world. We do so by replicating WWII U.S. paratroopers, usually attired in D-Day, 1944 uniforms, gear and (modern for safety) military type static line deployed parachutes. We jump from C-47 invasion marked authentic vintage aircraft (presently the bird "Black Sparrow' of the CAF) of the day.

LJT performs at air-shows, military reunions and such events world-wide, to include anniversary reunion and remembrance events such as jumps into Normandy, Holland and central Germany; with many members from France, Holland, Belgium, Britain as well as us from the U.S. We are doing a jump exhibition at Raeford Aviation and airport near Pope AFB in support of the 440th Troop Transport Wing reunion taking place this weekend. LJT will jump Saturday, Oct. 23, 2008. Ty & I will have the opportunity to jump together from the same plane. I will let You All know how that goes.

(Message from L.Ernest Bridgers, Jr. C/2/320)

Ever run across Ben Bendixon who was my RTO when we were attached to 502 Inf?  This was 1966 - 67.  He received a Bronze Star w / "V" devise.  Was from Washington State - Seattle, I believe.

Recon Sgt was Sgt Sanchez from New Mexico, I believe - same time period - at that time he, Ben Bendixon and I were the FO team for the Recondo Platoon, 502 Inf.

I have name and address for Fred Van Horn who also was a FO from C/2/320 attached to 502. I also have name and address for Harvey Snowden, also attached to 502 Inf. and got all screwed up at Dak To. He had taken my place when I was sent to hospital with Malaria and he was with Robert Ruggerio when he got killed when landed in a mine field. Also how about Tony King who was the Battery Commander late 1966 from Atlanta Georgia

Hi guys,

Although a few of you have been in contact with Peter Charbonneau you have failed to update the rest of us on his whereabouts. I had a very pleasant call from Peter today and he is in Spring Hill, FL. His contact information has been updated and is in the attached rooster. We didn't talk to long as he had to get back to work. Welcome back Peter. Thanks much for the call.

Since finding Tom Hulbert we have been getting feedback most every day Tom say's the Btry Clerk in 63/64 was a guy by the name of Thomas. Do we have the BC, XO, First Sgt or anyone from that 63/64 time period that can put a first name on SP 4 Thomas??? How about where he was from?? Someone must have saved a roster of names from a promotion, MOS changes, weapons qualification or schooling or anything. Come on guys, think about it and search!!!! And while you are thinking, (who replaced SP 4 Thomas as the next Btry Clerk in late 64?)

I would like to include the section you served in as part of your information. Please send me this info and I will add it. Case in point, I got an email from a guy the other that has been on the roster for quite some time and receiving all the updates. His best friend was on the roster this whole time, but was listed by his given name and he only new his buddy by a nickname.

When I heard from someone that four guys were all in FDC, I added that info to their contact information. It was when we added FDC that he realized who the guy really was and gave him a call. His friend did not have email so was not getting the updates. His buddy printed a copy and sent to him. If you have a friend on the roster that does not have email why not print him a copy and send to him. It may well make his day and as in the above info may get old friends together a few years sooner.

I would like to thank Tom Hulbert for his input.

(This is Tom's message)

Hi Roger,

Upon closer inspection of "A" 2/320 60’s and 70’s roster information, the battery clerk is missing. His last name is Thomas and he quickly made Sp-4 because he had a college degree, was intelligent and did all the heavy lifting in the Battery Office. He was a draftee and came about in March of 1963, So, he must have been discharged about in September of 1964.

10 January, 2008 (Copy of a note I sent to all “A” 2/320 guys) I sent this to you quite some time ago and have not heard from anyone that has made direct contact with Charlie. I wasn't there so Charlie doesn't know me but I do know that several of you know him.

The following Message is in our Guest book from 02 Oct 2008 and is signed Charlie. It may be Charlie Pearce but we have no confirmation from him yet. If you knew him please contact him at 226-ST@charter.net  and see if it is in fact Charlie Pearce

(Note from unknown Charlie)

I was in A Battery 320th Artillery from Mar 1967 through Mar 1968 and am trying to find old friends, history, pictures, contacts, or any information about our unit during that time frame. We lost a lot of good friends at Sad Hill on 15 October, 1967 and I am at that place in my life that I would like to find other members. I look forward to hearing from you.
A fellow Redleg, Charlie 226-ST@charter.net

“E” Btry 320 FA 1982/1994

“E” Battery 320th F A “The Berlin Redlegs”, have been the fastest growing unit recently. We have information on 365 guys that served in Berlin with over 100 of them found. Vic Alvarez and several others have been feeding me information on a regular basis.

These guys served in Berlin, Germany from about 1982 to 1994 and due to their younger age about 85 per cent of them have computers and email addresses. This makes for easy communications. Many of the Berlin Redlegs have signed in on the Website in the last several months. They have indicated that they would like to attend the Association Reunion in Clarksville, TN as they have not yet had a Reunion. I do appreciate all the “E” Btry 320th troops that have been sending me information and pictures. I hope to credit you all by name in the future.

23 August 2008

Sir,
I was reading your email and remembering some of the Soldiers that were in Berlin with me. My name is SFC Geoffrey Epler and I was a SGT and FO the entire time I was in Berlin from Jan 90 to Jan 93. I remember Wagner, we were in the same Platoon when I first got to Berlin, and I also remember SSG Bower.

Bower and I went to Basic training together in 84 and were together again in Berlin. He retired in 2004 and is still in the Ft Sill area from what I last heard. Justin Wildman was a young kid who loved to party. Too much sometimes but he was a funny Soldier and would make me laugh in the field. My last six months in Berlin were the best! Every Friday and Saturday night myself and a bunch of the single guys from 6th Bat Fist would go to the Friendship Club on Roosevelt Barracks and it was always packed and they played Country Music so we all had a good time.

Question, Have you ever heard or have any info on SGT Mead. He was in Berlin the same time as me from 90 to 93 and we were in the platoon that got sent to Desert Storm in January 91 thru May 91. Mead got out in the fall off 92 and last I heard of him he was a Truck driver but I haven't heard from him since 94.

I can’t remember his first name. I have copies of orders at my house and tons of pictures but I'm currently deployed to Iraq and don't have access to my stuff.
Gotta go for now and get back to work! Take care, and thanks for the emails! SFC Geoff Epler

08 Dec 2008 I sent this Email and a list of the Berlin Redlegs that I have only an email address on to the Berlin Group asking for a Home address and Phone Number.

Gentlemen,
We need your help with this roster. At the present Jason Woods is the only bounced address that I am aware of. We had others that bounced a while back and have been deleted. If this is you and you do not want your address and phone published for any reason, contact me with your information and request it not be published. I will continue to carry your name with the notation, address and information on File. (Editors note) I have only received address information from two guys.

If you have a USPS Mailing Addresses, Home or Cell Phone Numbers for any of these gentlemen, or their parents, please update us as we don't want to lose contact with you or those listed now that you are located. I received an update from Dwaine Esch today and he gave me the name of Ron Vanprice from WI. I found him in no time at all and he is now on our roster I know you guys are all young and busy but a reply of some kind would be appreciated. My goal from day one has been to keep you guys informed and in contact. Thank you. Rodg

08 Dec 2008 (Email from SFC Geoff Epler in Iraq.)

Roger,
Thanks for all your hard work putting the list of old guys together.  I'm still in Iraq but my days are winding down slowly.

I do hear from SFC Marcus Butler everyday now. He is a BDE FSNCO that is under my DIV so we argue back and forth on the phone about Fire Support matters but all is good. We are shooting plenty of 155 HE down range whenever we need to keep things quiet over here. I've seen Butler a few times over here and its weird cause back in Berlin I was 24 or 25 and he was a few years younger. Now we are both older and meaner and look old as dirt also!  It’s all good!

Thanks again for the emails. I didn’t see my name on the email list you sent today but that is ok. I'll be leaving here in February so hopefully I can find some old orders with SGT Kelly Meads name on it and maybe we can find him. I got some emails a
month back or so from Gonzo and he pointed me in the direction of Military.com. Kelly Mead had posted a note looking for me back in 2000. I wish I would’ve known then. Oh well.
Thanks again for everything you have done Roger!
SFC Geoff Epler, Camp Liberty, Iraq

(Edit. Note, Kelly Mead is found and on the roster)

04 Feb 2009 Reply to a question I sent to the Berlin Redlegs about the year a picture was taken. His P.S. is the most important part.

I wasn’t there for the Photo but I'd have to say 93 or 94 was the year. Our guns switched from M-109s in the spring of 92 to M-102's when Berlin BDE changed to a light infantry BDE. All the Armor and big guns got kicked out of Berlin then.
SFC Geoffrey Epler
Camp Liberty Iraq. P.S. 4 days left till I go home!!!

(Reply from Ken Simpson concerning the above mentioned Photo.)

This picture was taken in 1993 of E/320th and I have one of the originals, I was in the picture as the Survey Sergeant. Ken Simpson
